Forensic Dysphagia Lead Speech & Language Therapist

We are pleased to offer this exciting opportunity for a Speech and Language Therapist with strong skills working with dysphagia, passion for working with patients with mental health conditions and aptitude for service development. You will work directly with patients in High, Medium and Low secure hospitals in the Forensic division of Nottinghamshire Healthcare, building relationships with multiple teams, shaping the universal, targeted and specialist offer of support for people with dysphagia, and leading on quality improvement. There may be scope to work on Speech Language and Communication Needs in some instances, with consideration for longer term service requirements. You will form part of the Speech and Language Therapy Team, with support from the SLT Professional Lead, and leading on developing the skills of the wider SLT workforce. A band 6-7 development post would be considered for suitable candidates. Main duties of the job

The post holder will work collaboratively with each hospital and the Professional Lead SLT in order to plan and deliver a dysphagia service, with a high level of independent working. Application of clinical skills in order to address speech, language and communication needs of patients referred to the service will be required, with consideration of longer-term service strategy regarding these needs. This role requires a high level of clinical and professional expertise in order that those with speech, language and communication needs and/or dysphagia needs and their care teams benefit from a well-coordinated pro-active, specialist, efficient and effective speech and language therapy service with specialist focus on dysphagia in forensic healthcare. You will lead dysphagia services in the forensic division of Nottinghamshire NHS Foundation Trust, covering Rampton Hospital, Wathwood Hospital, The Wells Road Centre, and Arnold Lodge Hospital. Recognised SLT Degree/diploma RCSLT Registered HCPC Registered Experience

Working experience of assessing and managing a complex caseload with young people and/or adults with dysphagia within the context of mental healthcare or across multiple care settings. Experience of effective multi-disciplinary/agency working and established interpersonal and negotiation skills. Experience of designing and delivering different learning and development opportunities for staff teams. Experience of delivering environmental approaches to SLT service delivery and evaluating them. Experience in developing evaluation/audit tools and resources as part of SLT team. Experience of assessing and managing SLCN in children/young adults. Experience of working with adults with SLCN in the context of mental healthcare. Experience of leading/managing project work. Experience of supporting students and other staff. Experience of linking communication to risk issues. Post basic dysphagia training or completed competencies. Skills

Empathetic and psychologically minded. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Well organised and able to prioritise a high turnover caseload. Good reasoning skills. Motivated and a motivator. Team builder and team member. Autonomous and able to work without direct supervision. Ability to manage own wellbeing with access to supervision to sustain this. Highly specialist skill in working with adults with mental health conditions. Experience of supporting other staff and students. Experience of managing a project or service initiative. Training

Portfolio of relevant post qualification CPD including highly specialist knowledge of dysphagia, complex dysphagia management. Post-graduate training specific to client group - SLCN within forensic healthcare, mental illness/conditions, intellectual disabilities, trauma, acquired neurological conditions including head injury. Knowledge

Highly specialist applied knowledge of assessment and management of adults with dysphagia and a wide range of conditions including developmental disorders, acquired neurological disorders, head injury and mental health conditions. Knowledge of a wide range of dysphagia assessment tools. Knowledge of national policies in relation to ethical and legal management of complex dysphagia. Knowledge of Speech Language Communication tools, assessments and interventions relating to the client group. Knowledge of National Policy and guidance and impact on local practice. Applied leadership knowledge. Highly specialist applied knowledge of working with adults with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) and Asperger's, Autism, mental health diagnoses, attachment and personality disorder or other neuro-developmental disabilities.
