At the Central Laser Facility, part of the Science and Technology Facilities Council, we provide advanced laser facilities for UK and international scientists. We are building two new high-power laser centres - EPAC will deliver novel radiation sources for science and industry, while Vulcan 20-20 will allow physicists to explore the frontiers of knowledge with more powerful laser light than ever before. We are seeking a graduate to join our dynamic team developing the software for data management. We create the software tools needed by our users to run experiments, acquire data, and display it.

About the role and a summary of key duties & responsibilities:

In this role, you will contribute to development of the software that our users rely on to run their experiments, organise their data, and understand their results. This includes a mix of back-end services, front-end tools, and an interactive computing platform. You will have the support of your more experienced colleagues and the chance to work with a wide variety of technology.

You will learn how we use continuous integration to improve the quality of the code we write and how we use Ansible to automate deployment to our on-premises servers. As you learn more about the unique problems we are solving, you will be able to make significant contributions to the work we do and to our users' experience.

Familiarity with scientific computing and the scientific Python ecosystem would be a plus, but is not needed. Dedication to creating quality software, enthusiasm about the science we do, and an ability to work as part of a team are essential.

  • Scientific Python libraries, such as numpy, scipy, pandas, and xarray
  • Git, GitHub, and GitHub Actions
  • Apache Kafka
  • The Rust programming language and the PyO3 Python bindings
  • Bluesky, an experiment automation framework

Essential:
  • Achieved, or be on course to achieve, a minimum 2:1 degree, in a relevant field of study (S)
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK at time of starting employment (S)
  • Experience of developing in the Python programming language (S&I)
  • Knowledge of techniques for software testing (S&I)
  • Experience of using version control (e.g. Git) (S&I)
  • Ability to communicate effectively, collaborate within a team, and influence people with various roles and backgrounds. (I)
  • Passion for solving problems using engineering practices and willing to develop their skills (I)

Desirable:
  • Experience with the scientific Python ecosystem (S&I)
  • Understanding of scientific data and metadata (S&I)
