We have an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled and dedicated clinical nurse specialist within Haematology, to join the haematology team at Kettering General Hospital site of University Hospitals of Northamptonshire.

The CNS post holder will work within the busy and dynamic team providing exceptional care, supporting both the inpatient and outpatient setting. The applicant should have haematology experience to be able to support the wide haematology service.

Main duties of the job

You will provide a comprehensive service for patients with acute and chronic malignant haematological disorders. You will provide expert care, advice and support to patients receiving treatment on in-patient and out-patient basis and to their families and as a resource to other staff.

This role includes clinical duties, the development and leadership of nurse-led clinics to provide for the needs of the patients and their families. You will also work closely and support the Haematology Consultants and Haematology team.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide evidence based individualized patient care according to patients changing healthcare needs. Provide clinical leadership and expertise in haematology oncology and act as a resource to patients and staff. Assess patient’s adverse events to therapy to enable appropriate management and symptom control. Be the key worker for a clinical case load and facilitate the co-ordination of patients. Develop and review patient information. Maintain skills in advanced communication for all aspects of patient assessment, care and support. Actively participate in multi-professional meetings, acting as the patient advocate and representing nursing views. Practice evidence based healthcare and be responsible for developing clinical policies where appropriate. Accept and make appropriate referrals to multi-professional disciplinary team and take action if clinically indicated. Independent Non-Medical prescribing supports this practice.

Strategic Strategic planning, education, research and audit are key components of this role. Contribute to the collection of quantitative and qualitative data, utilizing this data by providing written reports when required which provide evidence of productivity, outcomes and quality. Actively integrate research, theory and practice by undertaking surveys or audits. Undertake service reviews, and planning for improvements of the service. Participate in the development of trust policy and clinical guidelines within haematology. Demonstrate the agreed set of values and accountable for own attitude and behaviour.

Management Responsibilities Provide line management responsibilities of CNS team, including supporting the team in their professional development. Provide a supportive working environment and maintenance of staff morale, promoting a culture in which members of the team feel valued and able to achieve their potential. Demonstrate a positive and professional attitude, promoting motivation, commitment and team spirit whilst working effectively as a team member and valuing the contribution of each member of the team. Actively participate in clinical risk assessments and ensure correct reporting of clinical incidents in accordance with hospital policy. Support the development and promotion of the specialist nursing service ensuring the delivery of high quality, cost effective care.

Professional Responsibilities Participate in a structured orientation programme in order to achieve full competency within the role. Work within professional codes and policies laid down both nationally and by the Trust. Participate in clinical supervision as a supervisor and where appropriate a supervisee. Contribute to the development of nurse led care and Non-Medical prescribing within regional and national level. Provide leadership for regional nursing forum in the haematology arena.

Training & Education Undertake continuing professional development to ensure that skills remain optimal and new elements can be added to the skills portfolio. Assist in the additional training needs of staff and participate in their continuing education development. Take responsibility for life-long learning and personal development through clinical supervision, appraisal and actively engage with learning development opportunities. Ensure the provision of care is in accordance with The Christie NHS Trust policy and procedures guidelines. Promote patient centred services for patients affected by cancer and work in collaboration with allied health professionals in the trust and in the community.

Person Specification

Educations, Training and Qualifications

Essential Registered Nurse Nursing Degree Recognised teaching qualification eg. 997/998, Mentor/Assessment or equivalent Counselling Experience Evidence of continuous professional development Advanced Communication training or willingness to undertake

Knowledge and Experience

Essential Specialist knowledge or interest in speciality Evidence of Operational Management in a clinical setting Finance and budget management. Evidence of primary care health delivery strategy. Caseload and workload management. Working in partnership with internal and external agencies. Development of clinical practice.

Skills

Essential Highly developed communication skills. Interpersonal skills. Liaison, influencing and negotiation skills. Documentation IT Literacy Caseload and workload management skills. IT technology development.
