As part of a collaborative venture between The Christie NHS Foundation Trust (CFT) and Mid-Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MCHFT), we are pleased to offer the opportunity for an experienced and enthusiastic consultant to join the clinical haematology service based at Leighton Hospital.
This job role is for 10 PAs per week to support the development of clinical haematology services across the southern sector of the Greater Manchester and Cheshire Cancer Network (GMCCN) and the delivery of clinical and laboratory haematology on the Leighton Hospital site. Flexibility may be considered for those who are unable to work full-time due to personal reasons.
This role will also receive a one-off attraction payment of 20% of the first year's annual salary (pre-tax, NI contributions) on commencement of employment. The payment will form part of the contract of employment to support continuity and delivery of service, and there will be the requirement for the post holder to remain in post for a minimum period of 2 years. Please note this will only be applicable for individuals applying directly and not via an agency.
Main duties of the job
The successful post holder will be responsible for providing consultant level support to the development of the clinical haematology service and to implement best practice in Haematology.
The role will include three outpatient clinics per week, responsibility for outpatients attending the Macmillan Cancer Care Unit for treatment, and provision of specialist input into the care of inpatients at Leighton Hospital. The post holder will have considerable liaison with local General Practitioners for haematological advice and will join the existing consultant's rota to manage this.
The post holder will be a core member of the leukaemia/myeloma and lymphoma multi-disciplinary teams and will have the opportunity to develop a special interest to suit their interests and the unmet needs of the MCHFT Clinical haematology service.
About us
The Christie haematology service acts as a tertiary referral centre for the management of patients with haematological malignancies and bone marrow failure. Inpatient haematology and transplant services for both adults and Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) patients are provided by the 31 bedded Palatine Treatment Ward and the 4 bedded Withington Ward. Outpatient haematology services are provided by the Haematology and Transplant Day Unit (HTDU) and the ambulatory care facility. The Christie haematology service has grown extensively over the past few years with the development of new treatments and CAR T. Services are now delivered at two other trusts with plans to expand services closer to home.
The MCHFT clinical haematology department, based at Leighton Hospital, is run by a highly motivated team providing outpatient, day care, and inpatient service to BCSH level 2a.
The directorate has a supportive and warm working culture where your contribution is valued; you will be joining a senior team with a clear focus on patient care and experience. Our combined resources, strategies, and talented workforce enable us to deliver a wider variety of high-quality services that are based on best practice and are continually improving.
Job responsibilities
Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MCHFT) provides acute and community services to a population of approximately 320,000 people across the Trust, which manages Leighton Hospital in Crewe, Victoria Infirmary in Northwich, and Elmhurst Intermediate Care Centre in Winsford. Established as an NHS Trust in April 1991, it became a Foundation Trust in April. MCHFT employs almost 5,000 members of staff and provides around 540 hospital beds, with a range of services including accident and emergency, maternity, outpatients, therapies, and children's services. The Trust is also part of Central Cheshire Integrated Care Partnership (CCICP), a unique local health partnership that provides a range of community services for people across South Cheshire and Vale. The Trust values of respect, putting people and patients first, and working together to continuously improve form the basis of everything that we do. The results in the 2023 national NHS Staff Survey showed improvements in many elements across all themes, making the Trust one of the top scoring acute/non-specialist Trusts within Cheshire & Merseyside. As a Trust, we have committed to a vision of continuous improvement across the organisation as the way in which we work.
The Clinical Haematology Service at MCHFT provides both inpatient and outpatient management of a wide variety of benign and malignant haematological disorders as would be typical of a District General Hospital haematology practice. There is a Level 2a Clinical Haematology inpatient, outpatient, and day-case service at Leighton Hospital, with Leighton patients accessing Level 3 care at University Hospitals North Midlands (UHNM).
Haematology has no dedicated inpatient beds at Leighton Hospital, and inpatients are managed in medical beds by MCHFT acute physicians with Consultant Haematologist input. However, Haematology provides a service to the Medical and Surgical Directorates to give haematological assessments when required by regular ward rounds, with additional ad-hoc visits as needed. The haematology team is also responsible for haematology patients receiving outpatient care, including those attending the Macmillan Cancer Care Unit (MACCU). Clinics are delivered in Outpatients and the MACCU; chemotherapy is undertaken in the MACCU.
There are currently new and follow-up haematology clinics distributed amongst the Consultant Haematologists, ANP, and CNS. The clinics are currently held in the MACCU, Main Outpatients Department, or the Digital Suite at Leighton Hospital.
The Consultant Haematologists provide support to the anticoagulation service when required.
There is considerable liaison with local General Practitioners for haematological advice, via the electronic e-referral system and e-Advice and Guidance system. The post-holder would join the existing consultants' rota to manage this.
