Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites. In collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Sunflower House building, newly relocated and opened on the hospital site. The post holder will act as a role model for all team members ensuring the delivery of a high standard of specialist, evidence-backed nursing care. They will utilise effective management and leadership skills with responsibility for a team of nursing staff. The post holder will provide a positive learning environment enabling staff to develop to their full potential. The post holder works as part of the multi-disciplinary team and delivers a high standard of family-centred care. They provide clinical advice, support, and leadership within HDU, ensuring that quality is maintained. This involves managing a wide range of complex and sometimes conflicting priorities. Facilitate and provide the delivery of a high standard of patient care within HDU in conjunction with the child and their family. Promote practice development, which is innovative, proactive and research-based. Provide clear and consistent leadership within the ward, act as a role model and ensure a cohesive approach to maintaining high standards of care. In conjunction with the Unit Manager and Head Nurse ensure that any human, financial and material resources are effectively used within the ward so enabling agreed budgets and targets to be met. Ensure that Clinical Governance initiatives meet the strategic aims of the Trust in delivering a quality and evidence-based service. Main duties of the job
Clinical Accountable for the standards of care delivered within the clinical area by the nursing team, ensuring best practice. Maintain personal clinical competence by taking responsibility for the 2:1 care of an HDU patient on at least two shifts per month. Responsible for the management of poor performance of nursing staff, putting action plans into place to address issues of capability and competence, liaising with the education team. In conjunction with the Ward Manager, is responsible for the safe and effective operational management of the unit. Responsible for clinical support and decision-making. Managerial/leadership Acts up as required in the absence of the Ward Manager. Contribute to the managerial rota to oversee the operational duties within HDU. Responsible for the line management of a team of nurses, managing performance through personal development plans and competencies, addressing poor performance when required. Responsible for ensuring the team identify and address ongoing health care needs of the patient and undertake effective discharge planning. Ensure the effective utilisation of financial and physical resources. Monitor and evaluate health, safety and security of self and others, implementing best practice in the clinical environment. Education and Training
Registered children’s nurse or equivalent experience Successful completion of High Dependency care course Evidence of support, supervision and training of junior staff on HDU. Advanced paediatric life support. Two years of Band 6 experience on HDU Experience
