The Role Scope

As a key member of the finance team, this role takes ownership of all commercial finance, financial planning, financial analytics, and management accounting. As the primary finance owner of trading costs in the P&L (north of £100m), the role will support and drive business decision-making, business partnering with senior stakeholders across the business. The position will lead and manage 1 qualified and part-qualified accountant and work closely with the financial control and purchase ledger teams. The role also works closely with the Data team to ensure that data and systems are used to deliver accurate financial information and the optimal level of business insight and business efficiency.

Role key responsibilities

Be the finance lead for key business functions, predominantly Operations, Customer, and HR but also Buying & Merchandising.

Help to define and refine business KPIs ensuring they are monitored and understood across MandM.

Drive and deliver commercial analytics across the P&L to support decision-making and identify opportunities / risks.

Oversee the Senior Finance Business Partner aligned to Operations and understand costs, KPIs, opportunities, and risks.

Oversee the finances of the EU warehouse operation ensuring 3PL performance is understood.

Business owner of all Postage income working with Customer and Operations team around pricing and profitability.

Support capex and opex requests including new contracts / contract renewals through investment appraisal including costs / benefits.

Ownership and preparation of budgets and forecasts, including bringing together all financial information.

Lead update and refinement of MandM’s 5-year plan.

Drive the Finance team to utilise all available data tools to enhance effectiveness and work closely with the Data team to realise data opportunities impacting both Finance and the wider business.

Enable the commercial finance team to use business data to drive informed decision-making and enhance processes and reconciliations.

Ownership of key P&L lines and accountable for parts of the balance sheet.

Management of the preparation, content, and distribution of Management Accounts.

Oversee month-end reporting, management accounts prep, Group, and Board reporting.

About You

Skill/competency

Qualified CIMA/ACCA or equivalent with 3+ years PQE.

Commercial Finance background is a must.

Strong team leader who has developed individuals and managed performance.

Able to work on own initiative.

Excellent communication skills with experience of communicating at all levels.

Experience with budgeting, forecasting, modelling, planning.

Good knowledge of accounting standards.

High level of numeracy.

Excellent attention to detail.

Have strong finance systems experience including analytical tools.
