The Role We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Head of Health & Safety to provide strategic leadership, advice, and operational support on occupational health & safety matters across all areas of our Group’s operations. This role is crucial in ensuring compliance with the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and supporting the Boards' employer duties. This role is remote with travel up to four days a week, which will include travel to schools and our Head offices based in Peterborough and London. Responsibilities Strategic Leadership:
Continue to develop a Group H&S Strategy with clear, measurable objectives for continuous improvement and risk management. Policy Development:
Develop and maintain Group H&S Policies to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of all staff and students. Compliance & Advisory:
Coordinate and disseminate relevant health & safety information and changes in codes of practice affecting the Group. Advise Trustees and the senior management team on the implications of current and emerging health, safety and welfare legislation, including evaluating options, making recommendations and generating action plans to ensure compliance across the group. Learning & Development:
Promote a culture of safety and awareness through regular updates, guidance and training sessions. Auditing & Reporting:
Conduct and coordinate regular audits and risk assessments of all Group schools and offices. Report significant issues to the Executive Team, Estates Committee, Compliance Committee, and Group Board. Incident Investigation:
Lead investigations into accidents and incidents, providing recommendations for improvements and ensuring follow-up actions are completed. Collaboration:
Work closely with school H&S Coordinators, Executive Business Managers, and Cluster H&S leads. Support the nominated H&S coordinator at each school location. Financial Oversight:
Manage the departmental budget, including memberships for CLEAPSS, AfPE, Smartlog, and third-party ionising radiation source management. Risk Management:
Highlight the importance of managing risks effectively to prevent harm, financial penalties, reputational damage, and operational disruptions. Qualifications • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent. • Certified or Chartered Membership of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). • Full driving license. Knowledge & Experience Experience in large and diverse educational settings. Excellent knowledge of health and safety law, case law, statutory requirements, and best practices. Strong understanding of the interaction between H&S law and employment/HR law. The ability to train and develop others. Sound knowledge of premises, plant, and equipment maintenance and management. Proven ability to find effective solutions to premises/property issues. Personal Characteristics Flexible, highly organised, proactive. Able to multi-task and prioritise work to meet deadlines.
