Head of Home Economics Key results areas:

The person appointed will be required to teach home economics at KS3 and KS4 up to GCSE level. The successful candidate will be responsible to the head teacher for the quality of teaching and learning delivered to the pupils. The successful candidate would be expected to take part in some of the school’s extra-curricular activities. Main Duties: Teach home economics throughout the school up to GCSE level. Depending on the qualifications, experience and skills of the successful applicant, the timetable may also include other subject areas. Lead the Home Economics Department. Prepare home economics policy, schemes of work, lessons, mark class work and homework, examine, write reports and undertake formative assessments of pupils. Organise department meetings and support other staff teaching home economics. Play a positive role in promoting home economics. Act as a form teacher if required. Contribute to the extra-curricular life of the school. Undertake supervision duties as directed. Provide catering for school events as directed by Principal. The range of duties may be varied from time to time according to the changing needs of the post and opportunities. Other responsibilities include: Responsibility for ensuring preparation of Policies and Schemes of Work for all classes. Co-ordinating and directing technical staff to ensure completion of departmental tasks as appropriate. Ensuring that the department implements current school policy on Literacy, Numeracy, ICT, Pastoral Care, Special Educational Needs and Careers. Setting Targets for raising standards of achievement and monitoring and evaluating all aspects of the work of the department. Responsible for oversight of internal assessment and reporting in accordance with department policy and school policy. In collaboration with colleagues, determine homework policy for the department. The monitoring of homework and marking policies within their department. Keeping up to date with developments in subject area and passing relevant information to colleagues. Liaise with Learning Support Co-Ordinator in implementing the Code of Practice for pupils with Special Educational Needs. Responsibility for departmental requisitions as required. Oversight of maintenance and repair of departmental equipment. Ensuring that departmental staff are aware of safety requirements where appropriate. This job description will be subject to review in light of changing circumstances and is not intended to be rigid and inflexible but should be regarded as providing guidelines within which the individual works. PERSON SPECIFICATION SECTION 1 - ESSENTIAL CRITERIA Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland. Hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification which has prepared the applicant to teach Home Economics as his/her main subject. Demonstrable experience of teaching Home Economics at Key Stage 3 and 4 level to achieve positive learning outcomes. Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post. SECTION 2 - ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL CRITERIA Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum. Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection policy/practice. Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice. SECTION 3 - DESIRABLE CRITERIA Demonstrable experience of teaching OCN subjects to achieve positive learning outcomes. DISCLOSURE OF CRIMINAL BACKGROUND The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines working directly with children or young people or in specified places as ‘regulated activity’. In the event that you are recommended for appointed to a post that involves ‘regulated activity’, the Education Authority will be required to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background.
