Job Description Here are the key responsibilities for the Head of News, Media, and Chief Mayoral Speechwriter role: Strategic Media Leadership : Develop and deliver news and media strategies aligned with the SYMCA Communications Strategy to shape the daily news agenda and promote the Mayor's priorities. Media Engagement : Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists, handle media enquiries, and ensure effective media engagement through press releases, op-eds, press conferences, and interviews. Speechwriting : Draft speeches and other materials for the Mayor, ensuring a consistent tone and message. Team Management : Lead and manage the News and Media Team, ensuring high-quality research and data inform all activities. Reputation Management : Monitor and manage reputational risks, providing expert guidance to the Mayor and senior colleagues on media matters. Performance Evaluation : Evaluate and monitor media success, developing plans to capitalize on successful initiatives and learn from less successful projects. Proactive Communication : Develop and deliver proactive media content to promote the successes of the Mayor and SYMCA. The Successful Applicant The successful candidate for the Head of News, Media, and Chief Mayoral Speechwriter role will be a strategic thinker with substantial experience in media relations and communications, ideally within a political environment. They will possess excellent speechwriting skills, a keen news sense, and the ability to develop and deliver comprehensive media strategies.

This individual will have a proven track record of managing a high-performing team, building strong relationships with journalists, and effectively handling media enquiries. They will demonstrate strong personal communication skills, the ability to influence and negotiate, and a deep understanding of the political context and governance framework. The successful candidate will have experience with national media, crisis communications, and operational management, as well as press conference experience. They will not be afraid to challenge senior leadership when necessary to protect and promote the organization's priorities and reputation.
