JOB DESCRIPTION

The purpose of the Head of Process/ Technical role is to be ultimately responsible for the Process/ Technical department, its delivery against business plan, and the implementation of the business strategy. The role is a management position and requires good communication with other Heads of Departments to support the business-wide delivery. The role is key in determining how the business strategy can/should be implemented, working closely with the Group Technical Director.

Responsibilities & Duties: Ensure all output from the Process/ Technical team complies with project specifications and statutory regulations, confirming all safety aspects of the design are achieved. Oversee the production of process system design, including validation of the following non-exhaustive list of deliverables: technical specifications, process/ technical calculations (volume, rates, speeds etc.), design reports, PFDs, P&IDs, and equipment lists/RFQs/selection. Host design reviews of process/ technical systems to confirm alignment with specifications as required. Check and approve all process/ technical scopes of work and/or specifications. Subject Matter Expert (SME) duties for all business operations. Ensure project resources are scheduled and controlled accurately, forecasting duration to completion of tasks, reporting on time delivery (OTD), schedule adherence, and supporting the project team with budget control in the respective area. Raise requests for additional resources, or changes to existing resources in a timely manner. Prepare quotation estimates for robust delivery logic through the department, and ensure the department is tracking the execution on award. Provide technical assistance and guidance to the projects and bids teams, as required. Ensure process/ technical elements of project progress vs bid is monitored and provide a report summary to the Group Technical Director on a weekly basis. Promote cost reduction, value engineering, standardisation, and risk reduction. Shared ownership of the business ISO 9001 processes, and responsible for incremental reviews and revisions as necessary to ensure a quality, right-first-time delivery is provided. Ensure the department is operating in accordance with these processes. Management of department NCRs and prepare plans for improvements, monitoring effectiveness. Identify and promote continuous improvement initiatives to increase departmental design capabilities and improve efficiency.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Experience & Skills:

Essential: Minimum BEng (Hons) in Engineering (preferably Mechanical or Chemical Engineering). Minimum 15 years' experience of process system design and delivery. Minimum 5 years' experience managing engineering teams on projects of value > £5m. Strong knowledge of the construction & process industries and applicable standards. Understanding of control system operating principles. Experienced in effective Change Management implementation. Planning, managing, and reporting project tasks and responsibilities. Strong attention to detail and committed to quality performance/output. Ability to apply logic to programmes, and resource the delivery thereof accordingly. Identification of issues and correlate timely remedials/ mitigations with the wider project/business. Ability to assess situations quickly, diffuse confrontation, and drive pragmatic decisions. Strong communicator with internal and external customers alike, with good presentation skills.

Desirable: Chartered Engineer (CEng) with an industry-related body (e.g., IChemE, IMechE). Proficient in the use of computer-aided design (CAD) tools. Understanding of conveyor system design. Experience of using simulation software, FEA, material flow analysis, and report writing.
