Canadian Wing is a 43 bedded unit specialising in Plastic, Maxillo-Facial and Corneoplastic surgery. We have opportunities for Health Care Assistants to join our busy and friendly team. Ideal candidates will be empathetic, caring, reliable, self-motivated, and able to work as a member of the team assisting all staff in the daily running of the ward and providing high standards of care to patients. Previous experience in a health care setting is desirable although orientation, training, and supervision will be provided. Basic IT skills are beneficial. Queen Victoria Hospital offers developmental opportunities for Health Care Assistants. You will be enrolled on the Care Certificate and be given the opportunity to apply for various apprenticeship programmes. Main duties of the job The Healthcare Assistant will work as part of the team under the supervision of registered practitioners to provide effective, safe, patient-focused care at all times. Contribute to the development of the care environment with a positive, professional attitude. Contribute to the maintenance of daily provision of service and care to meet the individual needs of patients and the department. Support the smooth running of the department and ensure patients, relatives, and carers are dealt with in a friendly and efficient manner. Ensure that policies and guidelines are adhered to. We are fully committed to training and development of the workforce with support for continuing education and learning. Job responsibilities Prepare areas in preparation for receiving patients. Assist in ensuring the department is restocked and maintain the cleaning of clinical areas. Comply with and maintain Trust & Local Infection Control policies and procedures. Assist with the admission and discharge of patients. Work as part of a skilled team to support the provision of an effective and safe clinical service. Provide a safe and effective environment of care for patients, relatives, and their carers. Support the registered practitioner in the delivery of direct and indirect patient care. Undertake a range of delegated clinical duties including record keeping, patient observations, and specimen handling. Check sterilised equipment, ensuring related paperwork is in order and completed correctly. Ensure all written documentation is completed, including Patient care plans. Assist with the provision of the day-to-day management of clinical equipment and report any problems to senior colleagues. Communicate with colleagues, patients, and their relatives/carers in a professional and compassionate manner. Assist patients with activities of daily living while maintaining their privacy and dignity. Ensure patients, visitors, and staff are dealt with sensitively and professionally. Act as a positive role model for peers, supporting other HCAs as required. Maintain professionalism at all times and respect colleagues. Recognise potential hazards in the workplace and report them promptly. Deal with queries and problems from patients and staff positively and helpfully. Ensure a safe environment in the department for patients/staff and visitors. Be prepared to extend knowledge and skills by rotation through the whole department. Assist in the evaluation of new equipment and resources. Undertake phlebotomy tasks as required upon completion of the competency. Be able to use any information technology within the department. Carry out any other duties commensurate with the post within own capability. Qualifications Essential A good standard of secondary education. Desirable NVQ in healthcare or equivalent. Experience Essential Experience of team working. Desirable Experience of caring for and supporting patients in a care/hospital environment.
