Job responsibilities Key Responsibilities
Leadership/Strategic Management
Provide high-level and visionary professional leadership across the midwifery agendas.
Ensure the development and implementation of a midwifery strategy which is in keeping with the national agenda, and sensitive to local needs, particularly with reference to inequalities, by working in partnership with stakeholder groups.
Work in partnership with the senior leadership team on the development and implementation of the public health delivery plan.
Provide support, professional leadership and line management to the Specialist Midwife(s).
Work with nurses within other specialist networks to embed pathways of care and support in developing guidance and standards.
Provide an overarching leadership and co-ordination role for the effective delivery of integrated midwifery services ensuring they are woman-centred.
Model and lead on the development of multi-disciplinary, cross-boundary integrated working that focuses on system-level working.
Lead on co-production with service users in the planning and implementation of all public health services within the maternity service.
Lead the development and implementation of public and patient network-wide communications strategy to ensure high-quality services, working in collaboration with other relevant stakeholders.
Lead on specific components of network-wide initiatives as agreed within the senior midwifery team.
Manage budgets and/or expenditure in accordance with local planning and finance arrangements.
Participate in own and others' appraisals.
Expert clinical practice
Ensure cross-network integration of general and site-specific specialist midwifery, based on an academic framework of research, knowledge and clinical experience.
Work across the service to support and advise on the implementation of agreed pathways, standards, policies and protocols for care, including evaluation and audit.
Ensure quality professional advice is available and provided at all times to the specialist midwives working within the service.
Work to ensure that all services are accessible, including the development of virtual consultations or outreach clinics.
Implement innovations in clinical practice, actively encouraging the utilisation of research and evidence-based practice.
Act in such a way that safeguards the health and wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults at all times.
Raise concerns with regards to risk, danger, malpractice or wrongdoing.
Person Specification Qualifications
Current registration as a registered Midwife on the NMC register.
Masters degree in a health-related subject or equivalent demonstrable experience.
Implemented and led on practice-related changes.
Strong evidence of continuing professional development.
Evidence of executive/leadership development.
Recognised Leadership Course.
Experience
Awareness of own limitations.
Knowledge and experience of all aspects of midwifery practice.
Sound knowledge of current national drivers, national maternity agenda, assurance around maternity quality and safety.
Excellent evidence-based theoretical knowledge with the ability to apply theory to practice.
Knowledge of issues around safeguarding children and adults.
Knowledge and experience of clinical governance and risk management processes.
Knowledge of strategic developments in midwifery, locally and nationally.

Understanding of midwifery A-equip model and restorative clinical midwifery supervision.
Substantial recent experience of working at a senior level either within the acute, primary or educational sector.
Experience of leading specialist midwifery services and applying assurance to national drivers.
