Sheffield and the Public Health Service Sheffield is a brilliant and diverse city of nearly 600,000 people and is the fourth biggest city in England. We have amazing environmental, cultural, sporting and heritage assets, and are proud of the fact that our outdoor city has been named as the greenest in the UK and is the only city in the UK to include a national park within its boundaries. Our public health team is friendly, ambitious, collaborative, forward thinking and passionate about making a difference and taking an upstream approach to improving public health. The team’s work supports our City Goals and our Fair and Healthy Sheffield plan which aims to close the unfair gaps in length and quality of life by improving the health and wellbeing of those worst off the fastest. It is an exciting time to be working in the field of food and health as there is growing recognition of the importance of addressing policy, the food system, commercial determinants and poverty in improving dietary health and reducing food related health inequalities. Sheffield’s food strategy sets out a bold ambition to improve access to healthy affordable and culturally appropriate food, and build a food system that is healthier, fairer and greener. We recognise the role of commercial actors and environments on health and inequalities, and in Sheffield we are proactively developing a public health approach to the commercial determinants of health. This extends into many areas of public health and council policy and is a stimulating emerging programme. The Role Working within the wider determinants team, this role will be supporting two Public Health Principal leads. You will be supporting the food team in developing, managing and monitoring health improvement projects, and undertaking performance management and evaluation. You will champion the food and health agenda and influence partner organisations to contribute to improving public health nutrition and to support the development of a healthy, sustainable and affordable local food system. You will also provide support to the development of work streams in relation to other wider determinants of health, including commercial determinants, planning, licensing, climate change, air quality and active travel. About You You will have experience working within public health or a related field and will be able to demonstrate core public health competencies. You will need excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to interpret and implement national and local strategies, think critically and appraise evidence. You will be able to inspire, influence and motivate others and act as an advocate for public health within the council and with key partners. You will have skills in project management, partnership working and an ability to work across teams and organisations. You will have a good grounding in public health knowledge acquired through a relevant degree or equivalent and be passionate about improving health and wellbeing and reducing health inequalities. If this sounds like you, come and join our team. In return we can provide a fantastic and committed team, flexible / hybrid working, excellent partnerships and a supportive learning environment with development opportunities. This post is focused on food and health and other wider determinants of health. It is
