We are seeking a highly skilled Speech and Language Therapist to join our friendly Macmillan Head and Neck Cancer (HNC) team. Our service covers pre-treatment clinics, the HNC surgical ward, and follow-up rehabilitation clinics. We are a HNC Surgical Cancer Centre for patients from Bradford, Airedale, Calderdale and Huddersfield.

You will join two supportive HNC Speech and Language Therapists, who are skilled in surgical voice restoration, nasendoscopy, Fibreoptic Endoscopic Examination of Swallowing (FEES) and Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Studies (VFSS).

We have excellent links with the MDT, ENT, local Speech and Language Therapy teams and our regional Cancer Centre at Leeds. You will benefit from peer support, supervision and training as required.

These 2 sessions are offered as bank sessions or permanent, depending upon your preference. Please contact us to discuss this, and state in the application form your preference.

Main duties of the job

This role will involve one session managing a small, but varied caseload on the HNC ward following surgery, including those with dysphagia, laryngectomy and dysphonia. The second session will include the laryngectomy out-patient clinic including stoma care, voice prosthesis management and communication therapy.

You will be enthusiastic to work as a team with SLT and MDT colleagues, including delivering joint intervention, goal-setting, training and support.

Dysphagia and head and neck cancer experience and competencies are essential to this post.

Experience

Essential Significant post graduate experience including recent experience in the NHS Experience of providing teaching/ clinical supervision Highly specialist knowledge and experience in the diagnosis, treatment and general management of a wide range of acquired swallowing and communication disorders. Experience in assessment, treatment and evaluation therapy in communication and swallowing disorders in Head and Neck Cancer patients Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team

Desirable Experience of student placement educator High level of knowledge and experience delivering a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions and evidence Experience of operational management duties

Skills

Essential Competent in core areas and specialist SALT practice The ability to prioritise a demanding caseload with non-clinical work demands and delegate duties to others. Management skills Good interpersonal skills. Competent IT skills Ability to manage own time/ workload

Knowledge

Essential Knowledge and experience in contributing to departmental/service/national audits Up to date knowledge relating to dysphagia management Attendance on external postgraduate courses relevant to the specialist field Evidence of specialist CPD

Qualifications

Essential Degree in Speech and Language Therapy with Certificate to Practice recognised by the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists Post Graduate Dysphagia qualification HCPC Registration Clinical Educator Training

Desirable Surgical Voice Restoration Competencies Videofluoroscopy and FEES competencies Involvement in a Clinical Excellence Network.
