Main duties of the job
The main clinical duties of this job include:
Carrying out specialist assessments of speech with children and adults to a very high level of expertise. Providing diagnostic and ongoing therapeutic intervention for children and adults with cleft palate and/or velopharyngeal dysfunction for speech. Independently carrying out video-fluoroscopy to evaluate velopharyngeal dysfunction for speech and to jointly analyse the outcomes with the cleft surgeon. Being an active member of the cleft multi-disciplinary team in Cleft Clinics and Velopharyngeal Investigation Clinics and take responsibility for one named outreach clinic in the network. Liaising with speech and language therapists across the network and providing high level specialist advice and recommendations.
In addition to clinical duties, the job also involves: Management tasks such as monitoring waiting times and inducting new members of staff. Clinical governance responsibilities such as strictly observing a personal duty of care in line with departmental and trust infection control policies when carrying out oral and nasal examinations. Teaching and training, such as delivering training to Speech and Language Therapists and Students. Professional development requirements such as keeping up to date with the current research in the field. Research and development duties including collecting and analysing five year old speech audit data using the CAPS-A protocol.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
Qualified Speech and Language Therapist holding a recognized degree/diploma Registered member of RCSLT Registered member of HCPC Master's module, post graduate certificate or equivalent level of post graduate specialist training including short courses, specific training and membership of relevant CENs
Desirable
Evidence of CPD in cleft palate speech such as attendance relevant training and conferences Completion of CAPS-A training course
Experience
Essential
5 years post graduate experience working as a speech and language therapist Support and supervision of speech and language therapy students Informal/formal training of other professionals Evidence of independent management of all aspects of cleft/VPD including assessments, investigations, diagnosis and treatment of communication disorders in this population Evidence of independently performing and evaluating velopharyngeal investigations
Desirable
Evidence of involvement in research and/or audit resulting in publication/presentation at national level

Ability to communicate highly complicated/emotive information at all levels of understanding, both verbally and in writing Excellent organisational skills, good time management and ability to prioritise Understanding the differing needs of multi-ethnic communities in our managed clinical network High level sensory skills to facilitate auditory discrimination of speech sounds at the highest level to ensure differential diagnosis Able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and ability to contribute to team discussions
