We manage and maintain over 2,000km of Scotland’s trunk road network, tackling just about every imaginable task and working round the clock to help keep Scotland moving. The North West Trunk Road Unit spans some 1,422km of trunk road through some of the most scenic parts of the country. It also includes 1,501 bridges and structures, including the Kessock Bridge which carries the A9 north of Inverness and the A87 Skye Crossing. The North West Unit covers a huge area of Scotland, from Thurso and Wick in the very north of the Highlands down to Campbeltown in Argyll and Bute, from Uig on Skye to Perth and Stirling in the central belt. The Highway Maintenance Operative, reporting into the Operations Manager and Operations Supervisor, should ideally be an experienced roadworker with the necessary skills to carry out various road maintenance operations, training can be provided if necessary. You should be prepared to participate in our winter and emergency response service on a standby rota basis. This is a full time role. Responsibilities and Activities

The erection and removal of temporary signs and barriers (permanent signs and barriers). Preparation, application, compaction and removal of soils, rocks, coated and other materials. Hot material patching by hand. Drainage works, excavation, pipe laying, kerb laying, scrub cutting. Installation and fixing of temporary/permanent road furniture. Operation of power tools, small plant and machinery. Driving vehicles including those with simple attachments such as tractors. Provide support for specialist roadworkers. Responsibility for the health and safety of the public, colleagues and yourself. Participating in standby and winter maintenance rota. Winter maintenance duties which include fitting gritter body and blade, driving gritter and spread salt by hand if required. Knowledge, Skills and Experience

There is a requirement to undertake training and to achieve competence in aspects of the job. Knowledge of the requirement for Health and Safety rules and procedures. Physically fit for working in sometimes arduous conditions. Experience of using small plant. Holding tickets for plant, traffic management, and Health and Safety an advantage. Full UK driving license preferably at LGV Class C level. Why BEAR?
