We have a rare opportunity for a dynamic and enthusiastic registered clinical practitioner to join our friendly Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) team at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon.

You will work as a member of the IPC team contributing to the daily requirements of the service across the Trust. The role will give you the opportunity to make a difference to the quality of care and improve outcomes for patients by providing evidence-based IPC clinical advice and support on the prevention, surveillance, investigation, and control of infection to all staff across the Trust.

We are looking for a professional role model with experience in improving practice in IPC and delivering education to staff. You will be able to demonstrate this with evidence of your commitment to continual professional development.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role involve providing specialist IPC advice to patients and staff. You will be required to support staff caring for patients through formal and informal education, practice development, and role modelling. You will practice under the direction of the Band 7 Senior IPC Specialist Nurses/Practitioners and the IPC Matron, working towards achieving agreed levels of competence, skills, and knowledge.

You will need to have good time management skills and be able to undertake a number of duties autonomously as well as work within a team. Excellent communication skills are essential to this role.

You will be part of the IPC team who ensure IPC-related safe and effective clinical practice, enhance patient experience, and ensure delivery of organisational objectives across our acute and community services.

Job responsibilities

To work within the IPC team, facilitating all aspects of the monitoring, prevention, audit, surveillance, investigation, and control of healthcare infection.

To lead on all aspects of the IPC service, as delegated by the IPC Matron, defining the way in which to achieve required results.

To provide advice and support, in line with Trust policies, to Trust employees, patients, families, and carers in all matters relating to infection prevention and control including the decontamination of clinical and patient care equipment not suitable for automatic reprocessing.

To act as a facilitator and change agent to support and enable Trust and other allied staff to understand and implement the need for change in current practice.

To be aware of and act upon, as appropriate, any current issues and research findings relating to IPC in clinical practice and support services. Ensure that relevant developments are effectively communicated to the appropriate Trust staff.

To initiate the undertaking of research, the interpretation and critical analysis of findings, and the application of research findings to practice.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

Registered Clinical Practitioner Educated to diploma/degree level Teaching & Assessing qualification or equivalent experience Evidence of recent update of infection prevention & control practice

Desirable

Infection Prevention and control qualification or equivalent post-graduation experience

Experience

Essential

Significant post qualification experience working in acute or community health care settings. Recent experience in the management of infection prevention & control issues. Competent with Microsoft Office i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint or willingness to develop competency

Desirable

Risk Management & incident Investigation Health and Safety Clinical audit Has a varied clinical background

Knowledge

Essential

Good time management Excellent verbal and written communication skills Excellent presentation skills Teaching skills Ability to drive to sites managed by the Trust Negotiation and diplomacy Cannulation, venepuncture, and urinary catheterisation skills.
