The Legal Services Department is a small, friendly and supportive Team based at Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro. We are looking to recruit an Inquest Manager with significant previous experience. We are looking for a hardworking, enthusiastic individual capable of working within a team and independently.

This is a post working Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week.

Main duties of the job

Handling in house, and/or, in collaboration with the Trust solicitors, inquest preparation, statements, case management and attendance. Researching, identifying, locating and gathering all relevant evidence in respect of the inquest including the use of the Patient Administration System and other Information Technology. Identifying people likely to be in possession of information and knowledge which is material and useful to the Trust in the conduct of the inquest. Through negotiation, influence, mediation, reconciliation and otherwise overcoming people's natural reticence/reluctance or explicit refusal to be a witness when they are known to have relevant knowledge regarding the circumstances involved which are the subject matter of the inquest or claim. Ensuring the goodwill of the witnesses is maintained throughout the inquest, which can take a lengthy period of time, to avoid the witness turning hostile and requiring a witness summons from the court. Interviewing, drafting statements and/or reviewing prepared statements to ensure they are fit for purpose together with preparing witnesses for giving evidence at inquest. Developing good working relationships with the coroner's office/police and other interested parties and ensuring coroner's deadlines for submission of statements, reports and documentation are met.

Person Specification

Qualifications:

Essential Educated to degree level

Desirable Legal Degree

Experience:

Essential At least twelve months recent experience, in an acute NHS setting. Previous inquest, legal or claims handling experience. Able to work effectively as part of a Team as well as independently.

Desirable Advocacy Experience. Clinical knowledge. Acute hospital experience. Legal knowledge. Supervision of admin staff. Understanding of clinical negligence arrangements for the NHS.

Practical and Intellectual Skills (including any special knowledge):

Essential Excellent written skills. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal. Practical computing skills. Effective research and investigative skills. Good analytical and problem solving abilities. Negotiating skills. Political acumen.

Desirable Knowledge of NHS structure and services.
