The Role The Rosalind Franklin Institute is a national research centre, funded by the UK government through UK Research and Innovation, dedicated to bringing about transformative changes in life science through interdisciplinary research and technology. Based on the Harwell Campus near Didcot, we have a purpose-built facility which houses both labs and office staff, including visitors of approximately 170. Our IT function is part of the Operations Team which has all the professional services to support our scientists (including IT, Finance, HR, Grants, Business Development, Project Management, Facilities and Procurement) and offers a friendly and supportive environment. We are currently looking for an individual who has some IT support experience to join and develop as an onsite IT Technician, within a small team including another Technician and Head of IT. You will be working onsite along with another Technician to ensure that support tickets are managed effectively and responded to in a timely manner, either by completing these requests or raising them with the DI Service Desk (part of Harwell site managed by STFC) or the Head of IT where necessary. The Franklin is a great place to grow professionally, so this role would be a perfect opportunity for an individual to further develop their skills as an IT Technician. You will be involved in project work assigned by the Head of IT to ensure you can develop your knowledge and skills. As this is a supporting role for the Franklin building and visitors, there is a requirement to be on site five days per week, with flexibility for occasional home working. Responsibilities As our IT Technician you will be: Serving as the first point of contact for onsite IT support within the Franklin and managing a cloud-based ticketing system. Installing, configuring, and maintaining software and hardware components of the computer and network systems. Diagnosing and troubleshooting software and hardware issues. Repairing and replacing damaged computer and network components. Supporting staff whenever they encounter challenges with computers and network devices. Maintaining and updating technical documentation regularly including the IT Asset Register. Escalating support requests to DI Service Desk/Head of IT where necessary. Supporting any other tasks as requested by the Head of IT. Selection criteria Experience with Microsoft, Apple Mac and Linux operating systems, including installation, configuration and support. Experience with computer and peripheral hardware servicing and basic repairs. An IT/Computing qualification (GCSE, BTEC, A-Level) would be advantageous but is not essential. Knowledge and understanding of standard office software packages. A good standard of written and oral communication. Good customer service skills. Willingness to learn and troubleshoot challenges. Ability to work effectively within a team environment, both taking direction from and supporting other colleagues. This is an onsite role so ideally you have either good public transport or your own vehicle. The Rosalind Franklin Institute is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and welcomes applications from all. This job description sets out the skills and experience we believe are needed to be able to do this job but, research also tells us women are much more likely than men to take this list of requirements as absolute and self-select out of the process. If you think you can deliver this role then we want to hear from you, regardless of the boxes you did not tick. In return we offer: 25 days holidays plus bank holidays and Christmas holiday shutdown. Generous pension scheme (employer’s contribution currently up to 18%). Group Life Assurance (also known as Group Life Insurance or Death in Service). Hub building with state-of-the-art laboratories. Training and development opportunities for staff at all levels. Bus pass discount scheme and good transport links to Oxford and surrounding areas. Cycle to Work Scheme. Access to employee discount platform (Perkbox). Occupational Health and wellbeing support including Employee Assistance (24/7 support and counselling). Health Cash Plan. Subsidised canteen and food outlets on campus. Free on-site parking. Campus location in beautiful countryside with social and sports clubs open to staff.
