Laboratory Manager - Renewable Energy/Anaerobic Digestion - Permanent - Girvan

Our client is a leading renewable energy business specialising in anaerobic digestion processes to develop renewable fuels. At present, they are seeking a Laboratory Manager to lead the management and operation of the laboratory.

Role Purpose: The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the overall management and operation of the laboratory, ensuring a safe, efficient, and compliant environment. This role involves overseeing laboratory staff, equipment, and resources to support research, development, and testing activities. The purpose of the laboratory is to provide data and support to the Business;

To deliver data to demonstrate compliance with PPC permits and accreditation schemes, To operate mini-digesters for the purpose of running trials to optimising digestion processes, To characterise feedstock, To verify the quality of food grade CO2 and other products produced by the Site, To investigate and characterise Anaerobic Digester microbiome, To investigate other impacts of site operations, To support the development of Sites in the United States and other territories.

Key Responsibilities: Laboratory Leadership: Develop and implement laboratory policies, procedures, and standards in compliance with Company requirements. Ensure the safe and efficient operation of laboratory equipment and facilities. Oversee laboratory budgets and resources to maximize efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Oversee laboratory maintenance and repairs, including preventive maintenance schedules. Monitor laboratory performance and identify areas for improvement. Use project management tools to maximise the productivity of the department and prepare reports on metrics for leadership review. Development of experimental plans and the management of the routine testing schedule. Produce, maintain and coordinate consumables in-line with requirements and budget.

Compliance: Generate data and reports for compliance across UK operations, including Long Sea Outfall data for: UFAS/FEMAS CO2 quality, FSSC 22000, ISO9001 PAS110 Environmental Measurements, including methane slip, odour, etc.

Safety: Complete training on analytical techniques, company procedures, and HSE as tasked. Ensure the laboratory is operated in accordance with SOP's, COSHH and risk assessments and working areas are kept clean.

Staff Leadership: Recruit, hire, train, and supervise laboratory staff. Evaluate staff performance and provide feedback and coaching. Manage internal and external stakeholders and address any issues promptly.

Research and Development Support: Collaborate with research and development teams to provide laboratory support and expertise. Assist in the design and execution of experiments and tests. Ensure the accuracy and reliability of laboratory data.

Quality Assurance: Implement quality control measures to ensure the accuracy and integrity of laboratory results. Conduct quality audits and inspections to identify and address non-compliance issues. Maintain laboratory records and documentation to improve compliance. Carry out experimental work at other locations from time-to-time where on-site investigations are required.

Qualifications and Experience: Master's degree or PhD in a relevant scientific field (e.g., biology, chemistry, biochemistry). Previous experience in a laboratory setting, in a supervisory or management role. Strong knowledge of laboratory techniques, equipment, and safety protocols. Experience with regulatory compliance (e.g., ISO, GLP, GMP). Excellent organisational, planning, and problem-solving skills. Strong leadership and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in laboratory management software and data analysis tools.
