As a leading UK Dioxin and Furans analysis laboratory and the UK’s leading specialist laboratory for independent occupational hygiene analysis, Marchwood offers a range of services for the environmental, occupational and food/feed sectors. Job Description: Job Title: Laboratory Manager (Site Lead) Site Location: Marchwood Manchester Dept/Section: Lab Operations Responsible for: Analysts/Technicians JOB PURPOSE STATEMENT The Laboratory Manager is principally responsible for overseeing the planning and management of the analytical workload within the laboratory to ensure sample testing is completed in a timely and safe manner in accordance with the requirements of the Quality Systems. Maintaining good communication channels with the General Manager and technical staff on site is an essential part of this role. The post holder will work closely with Customer Services, Business Development, Compliance and HR. The role requires the post holder to help with training, equipment maintenance, Health & Safety and meeting operational KPI’s. The position also requires the checking, validation, and approval of analytical data on worksheets, technical reports, and validation documents. JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES Supervise Operations Overseeing the planning and scheduling of work orders that optimise resource efficiency and ensuring customer requests are completed within agreed timelines. Meeting operational KPI’s. Liaising with Customer Services, Business Development, Compliance and HR where required. Managing staffing requirements for safe and efficient daily laboratory operations. Performing analytical testing to support routine operations. Ensuring control of chemicals and consumables purchasing within their area. Develop and maintain a working knowledge of all methods, instrumentation and documentation relevant to the section. Ensuring the quality of work produced within the department. Manage human resources within the section Managing resource in compliance with the Employee Handbook. Performing interviews and ensuring new employees follow an appropriate induction training programme. Providing leadership to all personnel and encouraging personal development within the laboratory. Performing appraisals and ensuring staff are motivated in achieving site objectives. Ensuring training needs of the laboratory are identified and resolved in a timely manner. Ensuring laboratory equipment is maintained and fit-for-purpose Ensuring that work areas and equipment being used are continuously maintained in a clean and safe condition, and meet any technical requirements specified within the relevant control procedures. Providing the General Manager with Capital Request Proposals for laboratory equipment. Responsible for the day-to-day health and safety Ensuring safety rules are followed and that specified protective clothing is used. Taking a proactive approach to help ensure the workplace is safe, with potential hazards identified and risks controlled. Carrying out and reviewing risk assessments for relevant activities. Other To deliver services effectively, a degree of flexibility is needed, and the post holder may be required to perform work not specifically referred to above.
