The Division of Emergency and Integrated Medicine has twice-weekly sessions of postgraduate and audit activity, including a weekly Physicians' Grand Round. There is also a weekly lunchtime Clinical Conference. The Division has a regular teaching commitment with resident students from Cardiff, Manchester, and Liverpool, with the majority appointed from these Universities. A core curriculum is taught to Foundation Year Ones and SHOs/FY2's, and there are also regular MRCP tutorials. There is a dedicated Clinical Governance Unit and Audit Office with permanent staff. Main Duties of the Job

The candidate will be responsible, both professionally and managerially, to Dr H Nair, clinical lead for acute medicine. You will also be supervised by a team of consultants within acute medicine. He/she will: Provide support to Consultant and Associate Specialist in managing the department in-patients and out-patients (ambulatory patients). Provide leadership and education to the junior doctors on the team. Provide On Call as a Middle Grade. Contribute to local postgraduate activity. Participate in Clinical Audit and CPD, which is fully supported by the Health Board. Participate in research projects as necessary. Glan Clwyd Hospital, opened in 1980, is a modern District General Hospital providing a comprehensive range of services to the population of North Wales, between Llandudno and Flint and the adjacent inland rural communities. It serves a population of approximately 220,000 with a considerable influx of holidaymakers in the summer months. There are 513 acute hospital beds on the Glan Clwyd site. There are additional in-patient beds at Abergele Hospital (Ophthalmology Department and Orthopaedic). An Acute Psychiatric Unit (Ablett Unit) is located on the Glan Clwyd site, as is the North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre. The Division of Emergency and Integrated Medicine includes eight medical wards, including an 8-bedded Cardiac Care Unit, a 28 bedded Acute Medicine Unit, and three Care of the Elderly wards. There is a busy Emergency Department, a Gastroenterology Unit, and a Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory within the Division. The Renal and Diabetes Centre attached to the site opened in September 2004. There are excellent pathology facilities within the hospital, including a Public Health Laboratory. The Radiology Department offers a full range of facilities, including a new CT and MRI Unit. Postgraduate facilities are excellent, with a dedicated centre and a large, state-of-the-art, award-winning Library within the hospital complex. There are six community hospitals within the hospital's main catchment area and peripheral out-patient clinics are held in most of these. Job Responsibilities

Health

Meets professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice). Ability to provide complete details of employment history. Evidence that career progression is consistent with personal circumstances. At least 24 months experience in medicine or an ACCS programme or equivalent (not including Foundation modules). MBBS or equivalent medical qualification. MRCP (UK) Part 1 or equivalent at time of application or work toward obtaining Part 1 within 6 months of being appointed. MRCP (UK) full diploma or equivalent. Intercalated BSc or equivalent. Higher degrees including MSc, PhD, or MD (where research thesis not part of first medical degree). Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current license to practice. Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies from a UKFPO affiliated Foundation Programme or equivalent by time of appointment in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice including: Make the care of your patient your first concern, Protect and promote the health of patients and of the public, Provide a good standard of practice and care, Treat patients as individuals and respect their dignity, Work in partnership with patients, Be honest and open and act with integrity. Evidence of achievement of CT/ST1 competences in medicine at time of application and CT/ST2 competences in medicine (as defined by the curricula relating to Core Medical training) supported by evidence from work-based assessments of clinical performance (DOPS, Mini-CEX, CBD, ACAT) and Multi-Source Feedback or equivalent, ARCP or equivalent. Eligibility to work in the UK. Not previously relinquished, released, or removed from a training programme in the specialty except under exceptional circumstances. Fitness to Practice

Is up to date and fit to practice safely. Language Skills

All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues demonstrated by one of the following: That applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English; or have achieved the following scores in the academic International English Language Testing System in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application - Overall 7, Speaking 7, Listening 7, Reading 7, Writing 7. If applicants believe they have adequate communication skills but do not fit into one of these examples they must provide supporting evidence. Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems. Awareness of the basics of managing cardiovascular disease. Able to demonstrate proficiency in a range of medical procedures (as defined by the CMT curriculum) as an indication of manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination. Evidence of competence in management of medical emergencies and in-patients through continuous work-based assessments, portfolio evidence, including log book documentation if applicable. Evidence of competence to work without direct supervision where appropriate. Demonstrate current ALS certification or equivalent. Demonstrates awareness of the basics of managing general medical emergencies. Evidence of some competences in the specialty as defined by the relevant curricula. Evidence of skills in the management of acute medical emergencies (e.g. ALERT, IMPACT certification). Evidence of ST3 equivalent procedural skills relevant to medical patients (clinical independence in central venous cannulation, chest drain insertion, joint aspiration, DC Cardioversion, abdominal paracentesis). Research and Audit Skills

Demonstrates understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues. Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management, evidence-based practice, patient safety, and clinical quality improvement initiatives. Demonstrates knowledge of evidence-informed practice. Demonstrates an understanding of research methodology. Evidence of relevant academic & research achievements and involvements in a formal research project. Evidence of relevant academic publications. Evidence of involvement in an audit project, a quality project, formal research project, or other activity focusing on patient safety and clinical improvement that, in addition to the mandatory curriculum, demonstrates an interest in and commitment to the specialty. Evidence of a portfolio of audit projects including where the audit loop has been closed and there is evidence of learning of the principles of change management. Demonstrates an understanding of clinical governance. Evidence of exceptional achievement in medicine. Evidence of involvement in teaching students, postgraduates, and other professionals, with feedback. Evidence of participation in a teaching course. Disclosure and Barring Service Check
