Lead Civil Design Engineer

to join them on a permanent staff basis - Remote working is on offer with site visits.

About the role:

To provide the technical expertise in the design and installation of Substation Layouts for 400kV to 11kV substation projects.

What will you do?

Technical:

Lead and deliver primary and HV design packages on substation projects, including Grid projects, wind farms, etc. as assigned by line manager. Develop substation layouts and associated detail diagrams in accordance with established UK standards and processes through working with and leading allocated CAD resource locally and in other business units. Develop technical specifications and material schedules for HV primary equipment. Undertake primary design & calculations, grounding & lightning design, steel design inputs, transformers, converters/rectifiers, HV & MV switchgear systems, auxiliary power AC & DC systems, power cables, RFQ, BOQ, SCF, DSLP, earthing system, busbar sizing, cable engineering. Provide technical support and develop tender scheme options and related project scope documents. Produce engineering time estimates and support monthly forecasts to complete. Lead and input into design and hazard review meetings. Provide technical support on site when required. Develop tenders and proposals as assigned by line manager. Train and mentor junior staff.

Position Interactions:

Line Managers for resourcing, domain knowledge, training and issues/conflict resolution. Other Engineering functions inc HV cables, civils, commissioning, secondary systems, engineering support and lead engineers. Site commissioning, test engineers and installation team. Customers and technical assurance for design review. Suppliers for technical alignment and review. Wider project teams incl. project managers, planning, tendering and supply chain.

Customer Management

Strengthen customer relationships through presentation and delivery of successful design solutions. Hold and participate in design and hazard reviews.

Other responsibilities:

Prepare conductor force calculations. Check and approve project documentation in accordance with established standards. Ensure own work packages and delegated work packages are delivered to project program, scope and align to allocated budget. Provide comment where required on delegated works.

What you will need?

Extensive experience in substations primary engineering in lieu of HNC / HND. Experience as a Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE), as defined by National Grid's NG/ET/SR188 procedure will be an advantage. A Chartered Engineer (through IET) status or working towards it is desirable.

Formal Education and Training Required:

MSc or BSc in electrical engineering or related engineering discipline/field or equivalent.
