Reporting to the project engineering manager, the Lead Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the day-to-day management of discipline engineers and/or engineering design subcontractors. This will involve planning of work activities, estimates and schedules, and reporting of progress. Perform a variety of engineering assignments in planning and overseeing research, development, design, construction, test, installation, operation, and maintenance of diverse mechanical structures, systems, and components. Act as a lead on design, analysis, or review team on complex engineering assignments. Perform a range of design development, analysis, or review tasks independently. Be responsible for complete designs, analyses, or design reviews. Organize and supervise a group of employees or subcontracted engineers for a given project, contract, or job with overall responsibility for cost, schedule, technical and employee performance. May train other engineers on technical issues related to the research, design, development, testing, and analysis of engineering assignments. Coordinate and work closely with other engineering, logistics, financial, and program management disciplines to define system specifications and requirements. Develop, maintain, and produce technical documentation and system/subsystem specifications. Direct interface and liaison with internal and external customers at all levels from quotation to final design and test activities, design reviews, and technical working group meetings to comply with requirements and specifications. Conduct site visits, investigations, analyze engineering problems, propose solutions and alternatives, and provide recommendations. Verify and comply with engineering documentation standards and procedures. Prepare, deliver, and submit technical papers and perform engineering studies. Support development of technical proposals and provide comments on the technical content and level of effort of the proposed scope of work. Perform all other position-related duties as assigned or requested. Education and Experience
Ideally degree educated in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant discipline. Chartered or working towards chartered Mechanical Engineer status. Proven experience leading a Design team. General mechanical handling and equipment experience. Experience with Nuclear glovebox design, modification, and decommissioning is an advantage. Experience of safety case justification. Sound knowledge of building regulations and planning submissions. Experience of CDM regulations.
