An exciting opportunity has arisen within our Trust to lead the establishment and delivery of the Lung Cancer Screening Service (previously Targeted Lung Health Check Programme) as Lead Nurse Assessor.

The role will lead the facilitation and have clinical oversight of the flow of patients through the lung screening program, and support any required onward referrals as recommended by the screening review meeting and lung nodule MDT.

The Lead Nurse Assessor will work closely with the clinical leads and Programme Manager to develop the infrastructure, policies and procedures required to establish the service. This role will then lead the service from a nursing perspective, as outlined in the national protocol.

The successful candidate is responsible for overseeing the flow of patients through the screening program, supporting patients and managing other nursing staff members. The role will also lead the interaction between primary and secondary care, have clinical nursing oversight of all patients in the screening service and manage the hub processes in reporting the findings and any required onward referral.

This Lead Nurse Assessor role is pivotal to the success of the screening service. The successful candidate will show leadership and ability to work closely across specialties. This is a unique opportunity to develop and lead a new screening service within the trust.

Main duties of the job

Support the effective delivery of the new lung screening service. Leading a team of lung cancer screening nurses and providing direct line management, as well as task management of the administrative team. Ability to take relevant history and clinical assessment to develop a management plan and next steps within the limitations of knowledge and skills while being supported by medical and other members of the multi-disciplinary team. Oversee contact of all patients within screening program, including patients referred to secondary care where further assessment or investigation is planned following the CT scan. Ensure timely management of any referrals with serious incidental findings onto appropriate pathways. Management of the screening hub processes, including ensuring relevant patient information are available to the clinical team during the screening hub discussions around CT scan findings. Prioritising and escalating patient care according to information from clinical team, being aware of each patient's situation/pathway and ensuring these comply with current Trust policies and Government waiting time targets. Uses specialist knowledge and skills to provide practical help and emotional and psychological support to both patients and their families, and practical help through effective communication around CT scan findings.

Qualifications

NMC registration - Adult nursing RGN Undergraduate degree

Masters degree Non-medical prescribing, or commitment to work towards
