As a Lead Test Automation Engineer, you have the opportunity to help shape testing across the whole organization. The work that we do is important, providing applications and services to both the Royal Navy and the commercial shipping world (keeping people safe at sea). Part of the role is helping shape the direction of UKHO testing strategy as we look to adopt technology such as AI into our toolset. You will also be part of a wider cross-government testing group that meets to share challenges and ideas that can be utilized across government. You will help lead the testing community at UKHO, providing mentoring to the community, a chance to help shape people's careers. The role has wide autonomy to make decisions on testing approaches, including guides given to our suppliers without the need to see approval from line management. We provide a wide range of training and career development, encourage attendance at relevant conferences, specific training courses, and other career development (such as sponsorship for relevant degrees). The role will be part of the leadership group of software and testing engineering, helping shape technology, skills, and the overall direction of the department. The role also has the opportunity and is encouraged to develop their own ideas and proof of concepts across the testing spectrum. Key Responsibilities
Coordinating the testing between an external supplier and our internal team Reviewing a statement of requirements (ensuring that any testing needs are captured) Providing hands-on support to a delivery team (around automation, load, performance testing) Mentoring a junior tester Taking part in design meetings with other colleagues to help shape the design of a new system Working on a proof of concept on a new testing tool Person Specification
A lead test automation engineer will have significant and varied professional experience in software testing, typically gained over a number of years. Experience of technical leadership in a technical/support team environment Wide practical experience in using agreed standards to design test strategies, approaches, and tests for a wide range of applications and services A comprehensive understanding of test automation, functional testing, non-functional testing, and technical breadth Hands-on experience of building and maintaining test automation frameworks Routinely uses automated testing tools and techniques Understanding and application of testing at the integration level across a number of complex and interrelated systems Alongside your salary of £59,706, UK Hydrographic Office contributes £17,296 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.
