Leader of Learning – SCIENCE AND STEM REPORTS TO:
Principal Purpose: To take overall responsibility to lead staff, students and parents in meeting the needs of all students within the SCIENCE AND STEM department in conjunction with subject teachers and in accordance with school policies, with specific responsibility in respect of students of all abilities at KS4 and KS5. As a key member of the School Middle Leadership Team, the Leader of Learning: SCIENCE AND STEM will be expected to work collaboratively with their colleagues, sharing their ideas, skills and talents and contribute to the effective functioning of a highly motivated, cohesive team with a shared vision for the future of Belfast Model School for Girls and a sense of common purpose. The Leader of Learning: SCIENCE AND STEM will play an important role in the school’s Middle Leadership Team (MLT) ensuring that the young people in the school experience the highest quality of learning provision from a highly skilled professional team of teachers and support staff, within a supportive, encouraging and disciplined environment. Responsibilities: Promote and provide professional leadership and management for SCIENCE AND STEM within the school to secure high quality teaching and learning, effective use of resources, and the highest standards of outcomes and achievement for all students, in line with the School Improvement Plan (SIP). Lead by example, providing inspiration and motivation, embodying the vision and purpose of the school. Promote excellence in teaching and learning and pastoral care within SCIENCE AND STEM, with a particular focus on KS4 and KS5. Play a proactive, positive role in promoting high standards in relation to attendance, punctuality, school work, homework and behaviour in class within the SCIENCE AND STEM department. Communicate and establish clear expectations and advice to SCIENCE AND STEM department staff in relation to learning programmes. Be available to attend relevant and linked school functions out of school hours. Objectives: To raise continuously standards of student achievements in SCIENCE AND STEM at all levels. To foster enjoyment and satisfaction in the study of SCIENCE AND STEM by students. To enhance the quality of teaching and learning of SCIENCE AND STEM. To establish and maintain a culture of high expectations for all within SCIENCE AND STEM. To encourage and develop students’ awareness and capacity to use SCIENCE AND STEM skills and knowledge. To contribute to a whole school cross curricular approach to developing and improving LITERACY, NUMERACY, and SCIENCE AND STEM skills at all levels within school. Principal Responsibility Areas: Strategic direction of SCIENCE AND STEM. Teaching, learning and the curriculum. Leading and managing staff. Managing resources. Key Tasks: To establish a vision and development plans for SCIENCE AND STEM, with specific responsibility in respect of students of all abilities at KS4 and KS5. To establish, develop and implement policies and schemes of learning, assessment activities for SCIENCE AND STEM in line with recent inspection reports, research evidence and SIP. To monitor and evaluate the effects of subject policies and plans, establishing clear targets for improving and sustaining student achievement at KS4 and KS5. To lead SCIENCE AND STEM department curriculum development. To provide reports for the Board of Governors / Principal as requested. To promote and encourage a rich and diverse extra-curricular programme for SCIENCE AND STEM. To lead the teaching of KS4 and KS5 SCIENCE AND STEM by example. To set expectations for the work of all staff involved in the teaching of SCIENCE AND STEM and to take action to secure improvement. To liaise closely with KS3LoL Science, Learning Support Co-ordinator, and SLT to ensure the needs of students are best met. To ensure the completion of necessary administration in relation to SCIENCE AND STEM. To lead the implementation of statutory and school requirements / policies on assessment, marking, recording and reporting. To develop effective working relations with all teachers of SCIENCE AND STEM, senior leaders and governors. To participate in the performance management of staff (PRSD) as required by school policy. To assist with professional development in SCIENCE AND STEM. To work with others in the delivery of Literacy, Numeracy and STEM strategies. To establish, maintain and develop appropriate resources for the teaching of SCIENCE AND STEM and to lead with creating a stimulating environment in SCIENCE AND STEM classrooms. To ensure the effective and efficient management and organisation of learning resources for KS4 and KS5 SCIENCE AND STEM. To manage the financial resources allocated to SCIENCE AND STEM effectively and efficiently. To undertake other tasks which may be required from time to time at the request of the Principal / BOG. This job description will be subject to review in light of changing circumstances and is not intended to be rigid and inflexible but should be regarded as providing guidelines within which the individual works. PERSON SPECIFICATION ESSENTIAL CRITERIA Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland. Hold a degree (minimum 2:2) or equivalent Level 6 qualification which has prepared the applicant to teach Science as his/her main subject. Minimum of 3 years’ demonstrable experience of teaching Science and STEM in a post primary school to at least GCSE level. Have a minimum of 1 year experience of leadership and management of other members of staff. DESIRABLE CRITERIA Demonstrate knowledge of having led an aspect of a school improvement initiative. Demonstrate knowledge of current issues and challenges for post primary schools within Northern Ireland educational landscape. Demonstrate evidence and impact of working with outside agencies and stakeholders relevant to school. Have successfully completed, or be in the process of completing, relevant postgraduate qualification. DISCLOSURE OF CRIMINAL BACKGROUND The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines working directly with children or young people or in specified places as ‘regulated activity’.
