Warsash Maritime School (WMS) is recruiting for an enthusiastic Lecturer Nautical Science to support the growth and development of the Short Professional Course Provision. The successful post holder will teach across a range of courses, with a particular focus on our Human Element, Safety and Security Courses. The role of Lecturer Nautical Science is to teach on relevant courses and to undertake associated administrative tasks and participate in wider course development activities. This role will have an emphasis on delivering Maritime professional short courses. Candidates must be passionate about supporting and motivating our students. You must be able to communicate effectively with our learners and work well in a team environment. Responsibilities Teach on relevant courses across a range of modules/subjects as required by the University and directed by the designated manager using appropriate teaching, learning support and assessment methods. Deliver lectures and lead seminar groups as appropriate. Participate in the examination/assessment process including the setting of papers, preparing marking schemes, agreeing marks with other staff and attending external examiners meetings. Contribute to validation and accreditation of courses and quality control processes. Carry out administration duties as required. Update teaching and learning materials as appropriate. Provide timely, constructive, formative and comprehensive feedback to students using all forms of communication. Research and Knowledge Exchange Refresh own subject knowledge and understanding to inform teaching materials, methods and delivery. Engage in research and enterprise activities and participate in external networks as appropriate. Other Duties Attend open days and assist with other course marketing activities as required. Demonstrate the University’s values of respect, ownership, integrity, engagement, inclusivity and teamwork. Occasional requirement to work unsocial hours. Assist with the supervision of student projects, field trips and where appropriate placements. Qualifications Degree in relevant subject area and/or relevant professional/industry experience. UK MCA STCW ’78 (as amended) A II/2 Certificate of Competency (Master or Chief Mate). Teaching qualification, Fellow of the Higher Education Academy or willingness to undertake the Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education. Doctoral degree or close to completion in an area of strategic interest to the University e.g. maritime, business, criminology, sport, health, creative industries. Knowledge Evidence of professional and academic expertise in the relevant subject area. Experience Previous teaching/training experience. Sea-time sailing as a Master or Chief Mate. Skills The ability to work within a course team or on an individual basis as required. Ability to plan, prioritise and organise work. Solent University offers an excellent benefits package.
