Locum Consultant Psychiatrist - Townsend Court We are seeking to recruit a Locum Consultant Psychiatrist to join our excellent MDT on Townsend ward, a 19 bed female acute ward, in Houghton Regis, south Bedfordshire. The post will be initially available for 12 months, with the potential for further renewal subject to service needs and assessment of the post-holder's performance. You will provide consultant clinical leadership for the ward and will be well supported by a specialty doctor and 2 Trust-employed resident doctors, alongside an excellent and well-functioning MDT including Matron, Ward Manager, and an excellent nursing team with full-time support from OT and Psychology. The ward has a turnover of approximately 15 patients per month, with an average length of stay of approximately 40 days. The patient caseload of Townsend Ward is predominantly made up of acute presentations of psychosis, mood disorders, personality disorders, and other mental health conditions. Main duties of the job

The post-holder will: Provide consultant leadership to the multidisciplinary ward team. Provide comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of the mental and physical health for 11 acutely ill adult female inpatients. Carry out all Responsible Clinician's duties for patients detained under the Mental Health Act 1983, maintaining care planning in line with legal requirements. Assume clinical responsibility for adult patients with mental illness admitted acutely from community services. Undertake all work in the context of the recovery approach, placing the service user at the centre of care planning and decision-making. Attend the ward daily to review patients and facilitate the care program approach. Provide support and training to other health care professionals and assist service users through the care pathway. QUALIFICATIONS

Fully registered with the General Medical Council. Eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register (or Specialist Registrar within 6 months of gaining CCT at time of interview). Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification. Eligible for Section 12 Approval (Mental Health Act) or willing to apply for such approval once in post. A higher degree such as MD or PhD. KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

Experience of clinical work in Acute Adult Psychiatry at SpR, SASG or consultant level within the last 3 years. Excellent working knowledge and experience of the application of the Mental Health Act. Understanding of ethnic minority issues and a commitment to developing culturally sensitive practices. Understanding of social factors relevant to psychiatry. Robust experience of working with severe and enduring mental illness and risk assessment. Experience of service development and introducing new services in mental health. Experience of working at consultant level in an inpatient environment. ORGANISATIONAL SKILLS/ABILITIES

Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary, multi-model team. Ability to manage complex workloads and support others. Consultation skills to services, teams, and individuals. Formal leadership and management training. Experience of team/service leadership. RESEARCH AND AUDIT

Experience of research work, especially in general hospital patients and/or patients with medically unexplained symptoms. Experience of grant-funded project work. Publications in peer-reviewed journals in relevant academic fields. Disclosure and Barring Service Check
