The Leeds Renal Service is seeking to appoint a Locum Consultant Nephrologist. The post will be a 10 PA appointment and will be available from February 2025, initially for 6 months. There are plans to advertise for a substantive consultant post to commence after the locum period. This post will also contribute to the General (Internal) Medicine rota. The successful applicant should hold accreditation in Membership of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent and should be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK, or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director. Applicants must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of renal medicine, including the management and care of chronic haemodialysis and renal transplant patients. Excellent communication and team working skills, a strong commitment to teaching and service development are essential. Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic and supportive renal department with 17 consultant colleagues, an associate specialist, and a junior doctor team. The posts will be based at St James's University Hospital and will be predominantly clinical with responsibility as a member of the consultant team for providing inpatient and outpatient care for nephrology, dialysis, and renal transplant patients. Job responsibilities

To assist with the management of the increasing workload in renal medicine across Leeds and surrounding areas, and to provide, with consultant colleagues, a service to Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of renal disease. To provide a complementary or enhancing special interest to those of the other Consultant Nephrologists in Leeds. To work with colleagues to devise ways to benefit renal services through the closer integration of the Leeds renal service with primary care. To share responsibility (with eight other consultant nephrologists) for the care of the Trust's chronic haemodialysis patients, with specific responsibility for supervising the care of patients who dialyse at the satellite unit in Pontefract. To share with consultant colleagues responsibility for the staffing of specific renal outpatient clinics as per renal consultant team job plan. To contribute to the care of patients following renal transplantation. To share out-of-hours clinical responsibilities with colleagues by participating in the renal consultant on-call rota (1:14 for renal 24 hours). To participate in the clinical supervision of all postgraduate trainees within the department. To contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching within the Trust. To develop appropriate research interests that will benefit the clinical service provided. To demonstrate a willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional, and national levels. Person Specification

Qualifications

MBBS or other recognised equivalent medical qualification. Clinical Experience and Career Progression

Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in renal medicine. Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion within nephrology, dialysis, and renal transplantation, and take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to a tertiary renal centre. Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills

All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues. Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice. Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via: CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview), CESR (or) international applicants should comply with the GMC specialty registration process.
