As a Machining Apprentice, you’ll be trained to carry out a range of engineering based activities, developing hands-on skills and experience as you start your career in mechanical engineering.

The apprenticeship is a 4-year programme specialising in mechanical engineering. At the start of your apprenticeship, you’ll spend the first 20 weeks at TDR Training School in Longbenton. You’ll then join the team at BEL Engineering, in Walker, where you’ll spend four days per week in the factory while attending college one day per week. Specialising in mechanical engineering, you’ll build a portfolio of evidence throughout your apprenticeship to work towards a Level 3 Machining Diploma. What you’ll be doing

Developing hand tooling skills and CNC machining and programming skills. Learning advanced manual turning, milling, drilling and grinding skills. Producing parts using multiple CNC machining techniques and applying problem solving techniques where required. Learning the fundamentals of full in house production, quality systems and working towards leading class customer specifications. Measuring/checking parts and making adjustments so they meet required specifications. Checking documentation to customer specifications to adhere to quality standards and processes. Building your understanding of how businesses operate and the relationships between departments. Quality, Health, Safety and Environment (QHSE) training

Who we’re looking for

To apply, you must have achieved GCSE’s in English and Maths (A*-C/ 9-4) and have a genuine desire to learn and develop.

We’re looking for someone who has effective time management, communication and problem solving skills. You’ll need to be confident working with numbers, organised, able to meet deadlines and comfortable working under pressure.

Relevant work experience in an engineering environment would be great, but is not essential. As long as you have a keen interest in engineering, enjoy working with your hands and like being part of a team, you’ll be a great fit!
