Job Title: Manufacturing Engineer I - With Concentration in Packaging Department: Engineering Schedule: 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM Monday through Friday Facility location: Chester, CT. Full-time onsite with some travel required to Charlestown, NH Summary: This candidate will oversee packaging projects and troubleshooting packing and shipping issues at both the CT and NH Plants. Leads packaging initiatives for new products and is the main point of contact with packaging material suppliers. Must be committed to being the subject matter expert for all Packaging Engineering tasks. Also provides Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) support to new product development teams and understands the core concepts of Manufacturing Engineering. Engages in continued learning of the fundamentals of Manufacturing Engineering and Packaging Technology.

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for small projects and multiple tasks within functional discipline Reads and interprets blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports Confers with Engineers and other personnel to implement operating procedures, resolve system malfunctions, and provide technical information Researches and analyzes design proposals, specifications, manuals, and other data to evaluate the feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements of designs or applications Provides DFMA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly) input for new product development of emergency lighting products Possesses basic mechanical systems knowledge and understanding to aid in the design and building of manufacturing fixtures Supports manufacturing of prototype and pre-production products Supports other Manufacturing Engineering projects and initiatives as needed Tests, analyzes, and selects materials for packaging based on durability and cost effectiveness Evaluates current packaging methods and costs, creates improvement plans based on input from the Manufacturing floor and data analysis Evaluates and adapts packaging to respond to field problems, sales feedback and customer concerns as required Ensures consistent packaging and quality across the Whelen Organization Improves performance and efficiency of the Packaging Process

Education and Experience

BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or Industrial Engineering w/0–2+ years experience Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Experience with 3D modeling software such as SolidWorks, Creo, etc Basic knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles Basic machine shop experience and strong mechanical aptitude is a plus An interest and curiosity in the Packaging Technology field. Industry packaging experience is a large plus

Physical demands and abilities:

Able to stand for long periods at a time Able to lift 35 lbs Able to operate basic hand tools (screwdriver, wrench, pliers, electric drill, etc)
