Funded by UKRI and the European Commission, the School of Modern Languages of the University of Bristol and the MSCA Doctoral Training Network ‘Remediating the Early Book: Pasts and Futures’ (REBPAF) is seeking to recruit a full-time doctoral researcher to undertake research on the transformation of Charlemagne literature in the period of transition from manuscript to early printed book. The successful applicant will join a vibrant and supportive international community of scholars; will benefit from bespoke, network-wide programming; and will gain hands-on work experience in related cultural sectors as part of the doctoral training network. The successful candidate will receive an attractive salary in accordance with the MSCA regulations for recruited researchers. This position offers a competitive salary, which includes a mobility allowance. An additional family allowance is also available, if applicable, and the network will financially facilitate researchers’ participation in off-site training activities where appropriate. Full PhD funding is guaranteed for 36 months.
What will you be doing?
The postholder will conduct doctoral research and participate in training, research activities, and the dissemination of research to further the aims and objectives of the MSCA Doctoral Network ‘Re-mediating the Early Book: Pasts and Futures’ (REBPAF). REBPAF seeks to advance our understanding of the ways in which 15th- and 16th-century book producers (scribes, printers, entrepreneurs) negotiated the dynamic relations between the manuscript book and the printed book and adapted to the evolving challenges of the market, and it demonstrates the continuing relevance of these cultural and economic negotiations to the modern world. To this end, REBPAF unites the interests of present-day organisations that re-mediate the early book – publishers, bookdealers, museums, and other stakeholders in the creative and heritage sectors – with those of academic scholarship. REBPAF has the double aim of: engaging a new generation of medievalists and early modernists in an innovative and collaborative research programme that asks fundamental and interdisciplinary questions about the history of the book and the written word and its future in a digital environment; equipping the researchers recruited to this network with high-level transferable skills and competencies through internships and training workshops provided by our non-academic partners that have a direct interest in and relevance to our research agenda. Applicants should have an upper second-class degree or higher (or international equivalent) in languages, literatures, or book history. They should have a master’s qualification, or international equivalent. Applicants without a master's qualification may be considered on an exceptional basis, provided they hold a first-class undergraduate degree (or international equivalent). Applicants will need a good reading knowledge of medieval languages (French, Italian or Middle English) and fluency in spoken and written Present-Day English corresponding to level c:
Language Requirements . Applicants will be working towards a PhD and should not already be in possession of a PhD. As per MSCA mobility rules, applicants should not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the United Kingdom for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their start date.
