Materials Test Engineer

to be based at our customer's office in Gaydon, UK. Our Engineering Research and Development department (ER&D) is a fast-growing function within Tata Technologies Limited that is assembled to work on exciting projects globally for multiple customers. It comprises highly specialized engineers across Automotive, Aerospace and Industrial Heavy Machinery. THE ROLE The Materials Test Engineer is responsible for testing and analysing BIW adhesive bonded joints and paints for automotive applications. The role involves conducting various tests, analysing data, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to improve material performance. AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY Conducting mechanical and environmental tests on materials, adhesives and coatings. Set up, calibrate and operate testing equipment. Diagnose and troubleshoot issues related to adhesive bonds and paint performance. Analyse test data and prepare detailed technical reports. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and communicate findings to stakeholders. Develop and optimise adhesive bonding and paint application processes. KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE Essential : Material Science and Engineering: Knowledge of properties of metals, composites, adhesives, and paints used in automotive and BIW. Experience with adhesive bonding processes and paint systems, including primers, basecoats, and clearcoats. Testing standards and methods: Familiarity with industry standards (ASTM, ISO, SAE) for evaluating materials, adhesives and coatings. Hands-on experience conducting mechanical tests (tensile, shear, peel) and environmental tests (humidity, thermal cycling). Lab testing and analysis: Proficiency in setting up, calibrating and operating testing equipment. Experience diagnosing and troubleshooting adhesive bonds and paint performance issues. Degree in relevant Engineering discipline or equivalent experience. Effectively communicating technical information to stakeholders. Preferred : Awareness of automotive manufacturing processes and regulatory requirements. Experience in developing and optimising adhesive bonding and paint application processes. Ability to manage and test projects, timelines and budgets. A continuous learning attitude.
