Your new role As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will play a crucial role in turning research ideas into detailed designs for production. You will be responsible for re-engineering designs to make them more production-friendly, writing and presenting engineering reports, and producing production specifications and engineering drawings. Additionally, you will gain knowledge of relevant trailer legislation and safety standards, mentor junior design engineers, and share your design experience in review meetings to ensure the best solutions for customers. Your role will also involve applying continuous improvement methodologies to your working practices.

What you'll need to succeed To succeed in this role, you will need strong problem-solving skills, a practical hands-on approach, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. You should have a sound knowledge of 2D and 3D CAD software, ideally Autodesk products, as well as MS Office and in-house computer systems. A good understanding of design stress/loading calculations, FEA, fatigue stress, and induced stress is essential. You should also have a solid grasp of engineering and design principles, an understanding of manufacturing processes and construction methods for trailers or similar heavy engineering applications, and a comprehensive awareness of customer needs. Excellent communication skills, the ability to produce high-quality designs consistently, and a willingness to work outside normal hours to complete jobs are also required.
