About the Role: We are a growing construction firm seeking Electrical & Mechanical Design Managers to join our client’s team based in Ballymena. You will report to the Technical & Design Lead. In this role, you will oversee the design, planning, and implementation of Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems, ensuring they meet safety, efficiency, and cost objectives. Key Responsibilities include: Lead the design of MEP systems, including HVAC, public health, electrical, fire protection, and security systems, ensuring alignment with cost plans and value engineering strategies. Prepare initial engineering reports, contractor proposals, and basis of design documents. Manage the MEP design team, assigning tasks, setting deliverables, monitoring progress, and mentoring team members. Collaborate with architects, structural engineers, and project managers to align designs with project goals. Coordinate external consultants and specialist contractors, proactively managing risks through early notifications (EWNs/NCNs). Conduct site visits to assess existing systems and identify potential design challenges. Lead or arrange technical workshops with stakeholders to ensure smooth project progress. Manage design budgets and negotiate contracts with external design agencies and suppliers. Oversee technical submittals, and proposals, ensuring timely development of design documentation. Review technical drawings, submittals, specifications, and models (Revit, Navisworks) to ensure compliance and buildability. Support BIM model development in alignment with the BEP. Ensure designs comply with relevant codes, standards, and regulations. Across the Project Lifecycle: Assist bid teams in preparing cost plans by providing early-stage engineering input. Identify and mitigate engineering risks while implementing cost-effective solutions through value engineering. Develop and manage RFIs, taking full ownership through design stages and facilitating smooth handover to delivery teams. Review design reports and specifications to inform cost plans and budgets. Provide technical support throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring compliance and quality standards. Evaluate and comment on additional claims by external consultants for fees or resources. Assist other departments with technical input on traditional and FM projects as required. Essential Criteria: Minimum Level 3 qualification in a relevant field. Electrical Engineering HNC/HND or NVQ4 in Electrical Installation/Technician. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Experience in team leadership or project management. Understanding of mechanical and/or electrical design coordination and planning. Knowledge of compliance, codes, and regulations in the construction industry. Strong understanding of commercial aspects of engineering solutions. Desirable Requirements: Familiarity with 3D modelling software and BIM requirements. Membership of professional bodies such as IET, IHEEM, or CIBSE. Experience as a Contracts Manager with strong technical knowledge (for more senior applicants).
