Reports to: Head of Group External Communications
Location: Remote UK based, able to travel to our Head Office in London when required
A new position, the Senior Manager - Group Media & External Communications will play a crucial role in managing a busy press office and proactively building our profile and communicating Capita's transformation narrative to key external stakeholders via national media, trade press, social media, and digital channels. You will also help manage and implement external communications to support on issues management.
A key member of the Corporate Communications team, you will report to our Head of Group External Communications and work closely with our social media manager, internal communications team, and divisional communications teams, as well as liaising closely with public affairs and external agencies.
The opportunity
We're looking for a confident, savvy media and external communications manager who can help us run our busy press office and evolve Capita's profile and reputation with external audiences. This role would suit someone with proven strong communications experience who is looking to develop their career in a small, fast-paced, friendly in-house communications team in a large, complex organisation that works with clients across the public and private sector. Creativity and a passion for storytelling are a must for this role.
What you'll be doing
Managing and responding to incoming media enquiries daily, often around high profile and sometimes challenging issues.
Be involved in issues management, liaising with divisional communications leads and our external PR agency to respond proactively and reactively to media enquiries.
Helping to shape and execute the external communications strategy and plan that sits within the wider Corporate Affairs strategy.
Creating a proactive news flow of engaging and relevant stories for both earned and owned media to help position Capita as a business that is on an exciting transformation journey.
Working closely with internal functions, divisions, and business units to source these news stories and updates.
With the wider communications team, developing and delivering content-driven, integrated communications campaigns to support Capita's transformation narrative.
Building media relationships with reporters at key national and trade media outlets who cover Capita and our sectors.
Monitoring the sector, general business and UK political landscape to identify opportunities for us to share our viewpoints and pitch our spokespeople.
What we're looking for:
Proven grounding in corporate communications, either agency or client-side, and experience of working with UK media including nationals and top trade publications.
Experience in public sector/government communications desirable but not essential.
Demonstrable knowledge of digital and social media platforms.
Demonstrable experience in writing and editing high-quality written content and working on integrated multi-media content packages or campaigns.
Sound understanding of business issues, technology trends, and current affairs.
Intellectually curious, analytical, and capable of exploring complex themes with the ability to communicate insights clearly and concisely.
Strategic mindset with a positive, energetic attitude to make things happen.
Highly organised, able to act on own initiative and meet deadlines.
Experience of working under pressure; an approach which stays calm and prioritises when needed.
Creative and confident in putting forward and discussing new ideas.
Ability to work collaboratively and constructively in a close-knit team.
Ability to engage effectively with and influence external stakeholders.
Ability to build personal credibility with senior internal executives within Capita.
