# Job Description: Mental Health Support Worker - Classroom Based

Location : Rochdale, Lancashire

Hours : Full-Time, Monday-Friday, 8.30 am - 3.30 pm

Overview: We are currently seeking a dedicated and compassionate Mental Health Support Worker to join our inclusive educational setting in Rochdale, Lancashire. The successful candidate will provide classroom-based support to students presenting challenging behaviours and those with Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC). This role requires an individual who is resilient, patient, and committed to fostering a supportive learning environment for all students.

Key Responsibilities:

Establish and maintain a supportive relationship with students, acting as a positive role model at all times.

Work closely with educators to understand the individual needs and educational plans for students with mental health challenges and ASC.

Provide one-to-one or small group support in a classroom setting, facilitating social interaction, engagement with learning, and promoting positive behaviour.

Monitor and support the emotional well-being of students, intervening and managing challenging behaviours calmly and effectively.

Implement strategies and interventions to promote inclusion and encourage participation in classroom activities.

Collaborate with other professionals, such as educational psychologists, occupational therapists, and social workers, as required.

Assist with the development of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs), providing feedback on student progress.

Promote a safe and nurturing environment that respects the diverse needs of all students.

Attend and actively participate in team meetings, supervision sessions, and professional development opportunities.

Maintain appropriate records and report concerns to relevant staff in a timely manner.

Respect and maintain confidentiality at all times whilst adhering to school policies and procedures.

Qualifications and Skills:

Experience working with children or young adults with mental health needs, challenging behaviour, and ASC is essential.

NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Childcare, Education Support, or Health and Social Care is preferred but not essential.

Solid understanding of inclusion principles and commitment to equal opportunities.

Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport with students, staff, and external agencies.

Excellent communication skills – both written and oral.

High levels of patience, resilience, and empathy.

Proactive and able to work independently, as well as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Commitment to continual professional development.

Enhanced DBS check will be required for this role.
