The opportunity

We have an opportunity for an experienced Underwriter to join us on the exciting and rewarding path we are taking here at Castle Trust Bank. Having become a fully authorised bank in 2020, we pride ourselves in being a fintech challenger bank, providing specialist property mortgages, retail finance lending and savings accounts to a variety of customers.

Joining the Property lending team, you will play an important role in underwriting new loan applications received via our Broker Portal, ensuring adherence to lending policy throughout the whole application lifecycle through to offer. We offer a variety of mortgage products of a specialist nature to meet the needs of customers such as portfolio landlords, buy to let investors, ex pats and those with holiday lets, in addition to providing bridging financing for both light and heavy refurbishments. Therefore, the types of loans you will be underwriting are both interesting, challenging and varying in size. With this in mind, and an underwriting process which requires manual assessment of the loan, rather than automated scoring, the role will provide you a perfect opportunity to hone your underwriting skills.

You will be responsible for managing a pipeline of your own cases, ensuring that key milestones are achieved as quickly as possible, working closely with the Processing and Completions teams to ensure prompt completion of cases, keeping our Broker partners informed throughout the journey and ensuring a first-class service is provided at all times.

This role will benefit from a hybrid working arrangement, to be based between our Basingstoke office (3 days per week) and working the rest of the week from home.

What We Are Looking For In You...

What is important to us is that you are a proven underwriter from within the mortgage industry having held a mandate. You will need to have the ability to work well to your own initiative and exercise good commercial and professional judgement in applying this to your caseload, making recommendations for mortgage applications outside of mandate. You will have demonstrable experience in a manual underwriting role if you wish to be considered, with exposure to assessing credit files, valuation reports and complex company information. If you have experience of bridging and refurbishment lending, this would be highly advantageous.

What is equally important to us is that you have exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal with a natural ability to communicate effectively at all levels. Considering the nature of the role, you will need to have a high level of PC literacy with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.

What's In It For You...

As well as a competitive salary, we offer an annual performance related bonus based on individual and company performance. In addition, a generous contributory pension scheme through Hargreaves Lansdown, life assurance, 25 days annual leave (plus bank holidays on top) with the option to buy/sell up to 5 additional days (terms apply). In addition, you will receive an extra day paid annual leave for Volunteering.

Wellbeing is also high on our agenda, and we offer healthcare benefits through Equipsme. In addition, all colleagues have free access to TELUS Health EAP to support their health and wellbeing. We also offer free eye test vouchers and discounted gym membership, and if that's not enough, we also offer season ticket travel loans (if applicable).
