Job purpose:
To support the Nursery Manager to lead and inspire the provision of a child centred nursery environment in which children up to five years old are cared for in a safe, nurturing and stimulating way that encourages individual development within a group setting. To assist the Nursery Manager in monitoring and evaluation of the performance of the nursery and to plan for its development and improved performance.

Responsible for:
The post holder supports the Nursery Manager in supervising qualified and non-qualified Child Care staff plus casual contracts and students and regular volunteers at the Nursery, and deputises for the Nursery Manager. In the absence of the Nursery Manager responsible for ensuring the safe keeping of the nursery building and outdoor play areas.
Key tasks:
Promote a calm, caring and reassuring atmosphere in the nursery in which every child feels included, valued and secure and able to develop to their full potential at their own pace.
In the absence of the Nursery Manager effectively manage the day to day operation of the nursery including the maintenance of legal staff/child ratios, the deployment of staff to pre-notified rosters and expenditure within the limits of the annual budget.
Assist the Nursery Manager in the supervision of staff delivering varied childcare activities that meet the requirements and principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage and the Nursery’s policies and procedures.
Ensure good quality communication between staff and parents that enables the delivery to reflect parents needs and that our approach to customer care fosters positive relationships.
Establish and maintain through supervision and staff training, a safe and hygienic environment for children, staff and visitors in accordance with best practice and Health, Safety and Welfare Policy.
Ensure high standards of staff care and competency through supervision, monitoring, training, mentoring and clear performance management.
Provide leadership and informed advice on all child care issues to staff, students and volunteers within the nursery.
Being a positive role model for other childcare staff, students and children.
Co-ordinate and play a part in the key person system, ensuring that the system effectively assigns responsibility for individual children to staff members.
Ensure records of all accidents and incidents are recorded, ensuring that the Nursery Manager is notified of any serious incident.
Ensure that a programme of wide ranging activities suitable for the age and development of the children in your care is carefully planned and recorded.
Ensure that observations and assessments are utilised to inform future planning and ensure that records of children’s development in your groups are maintained and kept up to date.
Ensure that children with Special Educational Needs are fully integrated into the group and have equality of opportunity following the Nursery SEN Policy and procedures.
To maintain close care relationships with parents/carers, informing them about the nursery and its curriculum exchanging information about the children’s progress and encouraging parents involvement.
Health and Safety:
Making sure that the nursery is a safe environment for the children, staff and visitors. This is done through ensuring staff are implementing Health & Safety checks and Risk Assessments. Additionally maintaining high standards of cleaning and hygiene procedures.
Expectations:
Minimum Level 3 qualification in Children and Young Peoples Workforce or equivalent (or working towards said qualification).
A minimum of two years recent experience, working in a Preschool/Nursery setting.
Excellent working knowledge of the EYFS and the current OFSTED statutory guidance.
Proven track record in the implementation of high quality learning opportunities.
Commitment to high standards of quality in all areas, which should be evident through written reports and accurate record keeping.
