To plan and implement individualised and group therapeutic assessments and interventions for service users aged 18 - 65 years who are inpatients within the Mental Health Unit. To collaboratively work with service users and members of the multidisciplinary team in establishing clear goals and recommendations that will assist in the recovery process whilst people are resident on the acute wards and during the transition period back into the community. Clinical Leadership: Identify and assess Occupational Therapy needs and plan therapeutic interventions using the Model of Human Occupation. Prioritise own workload using screening tools and delegate to the Recovery and Inclusion Workers as required. Work with the multidisciplinary team on the ward. Liaise, plan and co-ordinate with other professional agencies, including wards, CMHT, Housing, and Third sector agencies to ensure continuity of care and quality service. Participate in discharge planning meetings, care plan reviews, Best Interest meetings, and informal discussions concerning patients. Write accurate and concise clinical reports using Model of Human Occupation outcome measures and ensure up to date and accurate records are maintained regarding all patient contact. Comply with HCPC Occupational Therapists standards of proficiency. Maintain a high professional standard in client care at all times in line with the College of Occupational Therapy code of practice. Seek clinical and managerial support from peers and senior staff. Adhere to appropriate policies, procedures and guidelines. Liaise with the wider multidisciplinary team to enhance the standard of care clients receive. Participate in risk assessments, and work within the framework of the Care Programme Approach. Participate in staff inductions, acting as a role model to develop the skills and knowledge of junior staff. Responsibility for the fieldwork education of designated students. Attend team meetings and care-planning meetings as required, and participate in Ward Rounds ensuring follow up action is taken. Participate in the development of qualified/unqualified staff within the ward team. Promote a safe environment via Health and Safety policies. Move and handle clients using appropriate equipment and ensure safe working practices are maintained. Ensure client confidentiality at all times. Ensure that patients, their families and carers are directly involved in decisions which affect their care. Initiate patient-focused interventions and developments, which reflect social, cultural and spiritual needs. Lead in programmes of work as required by the Acute Care Forum. Actively contribute to the Trust wide Occupational Therapy forum. Participate in the organisation and provision of other appropriate therapeutic activities. Work with inpatients in their own homes in the community or hospital-based facilities where relevant. Person Specification

Education/Qualifications

BSc Occupational Therapy Registration with the Health Professionals Council Training in Model of Human Occupation Post registration diploma or equivalent experience in relevant field Experience

Experience of applying the OT process with people with acute mental health needs Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team Experience of competent performance at Band 5 in an acute mental health setting Experience of independently managing a case load Experience of contributing to MDT risk assessments Demonstration of reflective practice and use of constructive feedback to aid development Experience of setting up / facilitating and evaluating therapeutic group activities Knowledge

Knowledge of Occupational Therapy Process Understanding of specific needs of clients with mental health problems and their impact on occupational functioning Sound understanding of current government policies in relation to Acute Care including national guidelines, Mental Health Act, Risk Assessment processes and CPA processes Good organisational and prioritisation skills Awareness of Occupational Therapy Model of Human Occupation Assessment Tools and other OT models Interest in engaging in Occupational Therapy service development Skills

Ability to assess for and make recommendations for the delivery of complex care packages Must have the ability to manage complex and sensitive information Ability to communicate clearly and assertively when presenting information to service users and the MDT Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal Ability to work independently and as part of a team Ability to provide leadership for the team Ability to provide clinical supervision for junior staff / support staff and OT students Disclosure and Barring Service Check
