An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 Occupational Therapist to join our inpatient team in the Psychiatry of Old Age service, based in Kingsway Care Centre. This is an acute admission psychiatric unit for over 65 years which provides specialist assessment and treatment for older adults with mental illness including dementia. With support from Band 7 OT, you will be responsible for managing a caseload of patients experiencing these mental health issues, co-morbidities, and cognitive and/or physical health needs. We work across both inpatient and community settings to deliver a person-centred occupational therapy programme to effect discharge planning and address mental health recovery and quality of life issues. The main responsibility for the successful applicant(s) will be to continue to develop an occupation-centred service addressing our role in assessment and management of stress and distress, memory strategies, and sensory approaches using specialist old age psychiatry assessments as well as other evidence-based interventions. The main emphasis of this post will be to provide a service in the organic wards, working with the Band 7 inpatient clinician, to develop the service in line with recommendations from Local and National strategies. You will be asked to take on work in the functional ward as appropriate. The post holder will work as part of a multidisciplinary team working predominantly without direct supervision within various settings which could include the patient’s home, hospital, and community-based facilities. There will be opportunity to develop your role as a practice placement educator for Occupational Therapy students and provide support and supervision to Activity Workers. Previous experience of working with older people and the ability to relate purposefully and communicate effectively with the person with dementia and mental health diagnoses is essential.
