To perform as Occupational Therapy Team Lead for the General Medical Team covering the specialities across the Medical and Surgical wards. Responsible for leading and contributing to the continuing development of a comprehensive, 7 days working specialist occupational therapy service.

To stand in for the Head of Service in their absence and to represent Occupational Therapy at Trust wide and other meetings (both within and outside the Trust).

Main duties of the job

The Team consists of 1 Band 7 Occupational Therapist (Post holder) and a range of qualified and support staff.

The Team receives referrals directly from their Multidisciplinary Team and at Whiteboard / Ward Rounds meetings.

Post holder to provide a comprehensive assessment, treatment and evaluation of all referred patients.

Post holder to be responsible for leading the Team and providing day-to-day management, support, supervision and organization of workload for their staff. To be responsible for recruitment within the team.

To support the Head of Service in the day to day management of the department, and stand in in their absence.

Post holder is professionally and legally accountable for his/her own action and works with no supervision.

This team contributes to the new 7 Day Occupational Therapy service across the General Medical / Health Care of Elderly Wards in the trust.

Job responsibilities

Clinical:

1. Ensure that patients, relatives and those whom you come into contact with are aware of the role of the Occupational Therapist and components of the Occupational Therapy treatment programme.

2. Obtain informed consent from the patient, and work within the current legal framework for patients who lack capacity to consent, prior to commencing any treatment.

3. Select from a range of standardised and non-standardised assessments to assess and aid diagnosis, addressing disease management, sensory, cognitive, perceptual, behavioural, motor, splinting, psychosocial needs and functional abilities.

4. Make reliable interpretations of the assessment results, in order to inform other professionals in the diagnosis and management of the patients needs and guide the Occupational Therapy treatment plan, and provide recommendations for rehabilitation and discharge planning.

5. Carry out home assessments and/or follow-up visits, where appropriate, to facilitate discharge.

6. Assess for and provide aids and adaptive equipment to increase, enable or compensate for independent function, teaching compensatory techniques as required.

7. Raising or authorize equipment requisition, as per policy.

8. Assess for wheelchairs, specialist seating and positioning needs and treat as required referring on to the wheelchair / seating clinic as appropriate.

9. Assess, fabricate and monitor thermoplastic splints for patients as appropriate.

10. Assess for and identify the appropriate type of mechanical lifting device / hoist to be used in a patients home for discharge.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

To hold degree, or equivalent in Occupational Therapy. To have relevant qualification. To be HCPC registered.

Desirable

To have relevant post graduate qualifications relevant to the post.

Additional Factors

Essential

To be available to work weekends and bank holidays across the 7-day working Rota. To be able to travel to various parts of Cornwall, Plymouth and Devon.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

To have extensive demonstrable experience as an Occupational Therapist in physical fields. To have worked with a wide range of conditions, e.g. falls, fractures and a range of medical conditions. To have specialist proven knowledge & demonstrable experience of a wide range of OT assessments and interventions relevant to these patient groups, demonstrated by advanced clinical reasoning. To have proven knowledge of a wide range of OT equipment and minor adaptation. To have demonstrable experience in liaise with community services. To have demonstrable experience in caseload management. To have skill and demonstrable experience of staff appraisal. To have demonstrable experience of allocating and assessing the work of a Team. To have proven evidence of continuing professional development. To have completed clinical supervisor training. To have demonstrable experience in conducting audits and research & development activities. To have demonstrable experience of supervising staff of all grades. To have a good understanding of the wider issues surrounding the NHS. To have good communication skills, written & verbal, with the ability to demonstrate fluency, clarity & effectiveness at all levels.

Desirable

To have worked in the physical field and have demonstrable experience of pressure on wards. To have demonstrable experience in leading a Team of Occupational therapy staff. To have demonstrable experience of supervising student occupational therapist.
