Who are we?

Newmedica are one of the leading providers of NHS ophthalmology services in England, providing outpatient appointments, diagnostic testing and eye surgery. We aim to change lives through better sight and eye health.

We care for thousands of NHS and private patients a year in our specialist eye clinics across the country. We have significant growth plans over the next few years as we look to establish a national footprint and open many new sites across the UK.

We are thrilled to say that following an independently conducted survey of Newmedica colleagues, we have been certified as a Great Place to Work. This is a global benchmark that recognises employers who create an outstanding employee experience.

Role overview

We are looking for a new Ophthalmic Nurse to join our Whiteley site. This will be 40 hours over 4 days per week including weekends on a rota basis. Our Ophthalmic Nurses ensure a safe and efficient service, supporting outpatients through their clinical and theatre journeys.

You’ll manage the pre-operative patient process by performing a range of clinical assessments and getting the patients ready for surgery. The thought of eye surgery can be a daunting prospect for patients to deal with, particularly just before going into theatre, so our Ophthalmic Nurses need to be empathetic and friendly and able to put patients at ease and help them feel comfortable whilst they are being prepared.

You’ll care for our post-operative patients by helping them relax whilst you explain the next steps and medication details, clearly explaining what they can expect and what any possible side effects can be.

Our services are busy; we can typically see 18-22 patients a day in our high-volume cataract surgery provision, so you’ll thrive working in an efficient and fast-paced environment.

You will also support the consultant in outpatient clinics, undertaking diagnostic testing as required. You’ll be maintaining accurate patient records and in all you do, you’ll ensure the highest standards are met in terms of patient safety, confidentiality, clinical compliance and hygiene levels.

What skills and experience do I need?

You need to be a fully qualified Registered Nurse and have a current registration with the NMC. Ideally, you will already have ophthalmic experience in an admission and discharge capacity.

The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of Biometry/Corneal Topography/OCT/FFA/IOP along with skills conducting diagnostic assessments in Visual Acuity/IOP checks either Tonopen/Goldman Tonometer Visual Fields/Pachymetry/Slit Lamp Skills. Alongside the mandatory qualifications, the following will be advantageous:

Previous hospital eye service or private eye clinic experience

Knowledge of clinical practice and awareness of current developments in Optometry

Capable of working in a fast-paced, high-volume clinical setting

The training and coaching of others

The desire for and commitment to continuous professional development

A competent user of computer systems and programmes

An excellent grasp of the English language both verbally and in written format

A good team player – happy to jump in and support others when required

What we’re offering

A salary of £40,000

25 days annual leave plus bank holidays

A company pension scheme

Access to a range of benefits including free eye tests, discounted or free glasses, a free 24/7 well-being/counselling/advice service and a retail/technology discount scheme.

An environment where your learning and development is supported through a range of various learning tools and courses.

Working with a friendly multi-disciplinary team passionate about improving the lives of our patients

A bright, spacious and modern working environment, built to the highest standards
