Ophthalmic Nurse
to join our dynamic team in the outpatient and theatre settings. The successful candidate will play a vital role in delivering high-quality care to patients with a variety of eye conditions. This role combines clinical expertise with patient-focused care to ensure optimal outcomes and exceptional patient experiences. Key Responsibilities Clinical Care in Outpatient Settings Perform thorough patient assessments, including history-taking, vision testing, and administering diagnostic procedures (e.g., tonometry, visual acuity tests). Assist in minor ophthalmic procedures and ensure aseptic techniques are adhered to. Educate patients about their conditions, treatments, and post-procedure care. Administer prescribed medications, including eye drops and injections, as per protocols. Support consultant ophthalmologists during clinics, ensuring smooth workflow and timely patient care. Clinical Care in Theatre Settings Prepare the operating room for ophthalmic surgeries, including setting up instruments and ensuring all equipment is sterilized and ready for use. Assist surgeons during procedures, anticipating their needs and ensuring patient safety. Monitor patients’ vital signs and respond promptly to any changes during procedures. Provide post-operative care, including dressing changes and patient monitoring. Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control standards. Patient-Centred Care Deliver compassionate, empathetic, and professional nursing care to patients of all ages. Build trust with patients by clearly communicating procedures, addressing concerns, and managing expectations. Actively participate in discharge planning and follow-up care coordination. Professional Development and Team Collaboration Participate in training and development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge in ophthalmic nursing. Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure seamless care delivery across outpatient and theatre settings. Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and maintain accurate clinical documentation. Compliance and Safety Adhere to hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory guidelines. Ensure safe handling and disposal of clinical waste and sharps. Report and document any incidents, near misses, or concerns in line with organizational policy. Qualifications and Experience Essential: Registered Nurse with a valid NMC Nursing License. ODP with current HCPC. Assistant Nurse with valid NMC license. Proven experience in ophthalmic nursing or a strong interest in specializing in this area. Competence in assisting with minor procedures and handling ophthalmic instruments. Knowledge of infection prevention, aseptic techniques, and operating room protocols. Desirable: Certification or additional training in ophthalmic nursing. Experience in administering eye medications and assisting with eye surgeries. Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems. Key Skills and Attributes Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to provide patient-centred care. Strong organizational and multitasking abilities to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment. Attention to detail, particularly when handling delicate instruments and procedures.
