Main duties of the job
To act as an autonomous clinical specialist practitioner providing expert assessment in the field of Paediatric Occupational Therapy. To be responsible for the evaluation, design, and the effective treatment and management of service users requiring assessment, care planning, and rehabilitation in Children Centre and community settings in order to facilitate appropriate pathway management and maximise their independence and functional ability. To use highly specialised, advanced clinical reasoning skills to contribute to differential diagnosis. To work closely as part of the Paediatric Occupational Therapy Team and wider multidisciplinary team with all hospital-based and community colleagues in order to maintain continuity of service. To independently manage own daily complex caseload as part of a multidisciplinary team, triaging paediatric patients, ensuring that patients are seen by the most appropriate healthcare professional. To take a lead role in the post-graduate education of Occupational Therapy colleagues and other professions. Impart knowledge and skills, guiding further knowledge acquisition and acting as a mentor.

The post holder is expected: To manage own daily highly specialist/expert complex caseload as an autonomous practitioner. To act as a highly specialist clinical resource, disseminating expert information and education to Occupational Therapy colleagues, the general public, and other healthcare professionals, in both Primary, Secondary care, Domiciliary, and Educational settings. To review patient referrals to the Paediatric Occupational therapy waiting list by undertaking triage and highly complex assessments, using advanced levels of clinical reasoning to contribute to differential diagnosis and ensure the right service at the right time. To be responsible for referral for diagnostic investigations, and/or recommendation for specific medical or therapy intervention or appropriate alternative management e.g. spasticity management, botox. To be responsible for linking with relevant consultant clinics as an expert resource, including Complex Paediatric Clinics and Paediatric Neurology clinic. To provide direct advice for management and/or deliver intervention using highly skilled, technical physical techniques using highly developed physical skills requiring a high degree of precision and developing rehabilitation programmes. To be responsible for implementing change within own practice and influencing and monitoring standards of Occupational Therapy practice within the team.
Person Specification
Qualifications and knowledge
Essential Degree/Diploma in Occupational Therapy. HCPC Registration. Evidence of attendance on post-graduate courses and advanced training to Masters level equivalence. Knowledge of appropriate clinical guidelines - Local and National.
Desirable MSc or post-graduate diploma in relevant area. Fieldwork Education Training. Experience of teaching at post-graduate level.
Experience
Essential Extensive Paediatric OT experience. Knowledge of Paediatric OT challenges. Managing a complex caseload. Experience in Audit/Research.
Desirable Experience of working alongside Paediatric Consultants or similar. Experience of working in Paediatric MDT. Experience of supervision. Member of RCOT CYP Specialist interest group.
Skills
Essential Excellent communication skills. Advanced assessment and intervention skills. Coaching and mentoring skills. Ability to use highly specialised clinical reasoning skills to contribute to differential diagnosis, and facilitate appropriate pathway management to maximise patient independence and functional ability.
Desirable The ability to speak or learn Welsh to a satisfactory level. Higher level IT e.g. data collection. Post Grad training in Paediatric models of practice.
