Band 6 - Junior Sister Contract - Permanent Are you an experienced, motivated and enthusiastic children's emergency nurse? If so then we would love to meet you. We are looking for someone who will bring a positive attitude to the Trust and can demonstrate a kind and compassionate attitude. We will support you in developing your clinical skills and competencies with the support of our paediatric senior nurses in the form of APLS, HDU course, leadership courses, and a variety of inspiring in house courses such as Mental health, Plastering and UCC skills and triage study day among others. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Clinical Responsibilities Assess children on arrival in the treatment area and prioritise need for clinical intervention. Plan, implement and evaluate care regimes for individual children providing quick and effective flow through the department. Supervise junior staff and students in all aspects of care, ensuring they have the knowledge, skills and resources to carry out care delegated to them. Maintain effective communication with nursing, ancillary, medical and paramedical colleagues. Ensure the safe administration of medicines in accordance with local policy and NMC guidelines, including Patient Group Directions. Ensure high standards of patient care at all times and assist in monitoring and maintaining quality care initiatives. Maintain the privacy and dignity of children/young people throughout their time in the Emergency Department. Develop an area of clinical interest and provide nursing expertise to improve the care & services offered to children and their families. Ensure an appropriate, welcoming and safe environment is provided for children and their families. Develop and keep clinical knowledge and skills updated, including developing and maintaining extended clinical role skills, following appropriate training. Maintain safe and effective discharge procedures, liaising with other relevant healthcare/support professionals. Provide support for children/young people and their families. Direct them to relevant services if appropriate. Assist in the identification of any child protection issues and make referrals to appropriate multidisciplinary team members. Managerial Responsibilities Organise own work and assist junior staff in managing their workload. Act as an effective role model, mentor and preceptor to junior staff and students. Ensure that nursing procedures and policies are followed. Regularly take charge of a group of children. Inform the Shift leader / Lead Nurse of any activity in the department which affects patient care and department flow. Maintain an awareness of clinical and professional developments in nursing. Participate in the development and implementation of new initiatives. Report accidents/incidents and complaints to the paediatric lead nurse or in his/her absence, the shift leader. Assist in the management of resources in an effective and efficient manner. Person specification

Education / Qualifications

Registered Nurse (Paediatric) Mentorship qualification (or willingness to undertake) PILS APLS (or willingness to undertake) Emergency Nursing Course BSc or working towards Other leadership courses Skills & Abilities

Ability to work well as part of a team. Ability to manage own workload, and supervise workload of junior staff. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Plastering and wound closure. Adaptability to changing workload. Experience managing a department under supervision/in the absence of a senior. Knowledge & Experience

Sufficient experience to have completed core competencies in emergency nursing. Experience of regularly working in Triage, Urgent Care/Minors, Resus independently. Knowledge of children’s safeguarding principles. Experience of shift management & experience of appraising staff. PERSONAL QUALITIES
