Job summary

The Clinical Nurse Manager in the Paediatric Emergency Department (PED) is a pivotal role in the clinical leadership and management of nursing and emergency care. As an experienced Nurse, Leader and Manager you will lead a group of Paediatric Nurses and Emergency Care Nurses (RN Adult) to deliver outstanding care for children/young people and their families. You will promote a multi-disciplinary approach to care and work collaboratively with other professionals within the department and maintain a strong operational link to other areas of the emergency and urgent care departments/pathways.

Main duties of the job

The Clinical Nurse Manager (PED) will be accountable & responsible for (including but not limited to): Being a nursing clinical expert and role model in the delivery of high-quality patient care in the department. Demonstrating clinical leadership skills with accountability, line of sight to patients, agility, responsiveness, and compassion. Managing the department to be sustainable, efficient, effective, and financially diligent in the provision of care. Promoting and developing a culture of learning, continual development, and innovation. Managing the supervision, support, and development of a designated multi-disciplinary team consisting of Nurses, Healthcare Assistants, Play Specialists, and Students. Effectively utilising people and physical resources through efficient rostering and organisation. Ensuring staff members work within organisational policies and procedures. Creating a culture of safeguarding and thinking of children and families.

Job responsibilities To lead and manage all aspects of nursing within the designated Paediatric Emergency Department. To demonstrate clinical expertise in nursing practice, working alongside the team and leading/attending complex paediatric emergencies. To manage and co-ordinate the clinical area on a regular basis, participating in indirect patient care and supervision of junior staff. To maintain a clinical knowledge base and practice advanced paediatric emergency nursing care skills. To supervise others in the delivery of these skills. To be aware of clinical developments and ensure that the multi-disciplinary team are kept informed/updated. To ensure communication with children and families is established, ensuring empathy and reassurance regarding assessment, care, and treatment. To ensure accurate and comprehensive nursing records are maintained using appropriate documentation (electronic and/or written form). To ensure safe signposting and/or referral to other services from the Paediatric Emergency Department. To promote safe and effective discharge, making appropriate arrangements for patients leaving the department, making referrals, and providing information to community services, as required. To establish effective working relations with all members of the multidisciplinary team to promote good communication and a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care. To behave in a manner that is professional, positive, and polite.

Educations, Training and Qualifications

Essential Degree in Nursing (BSc, Post Grad Cert/Dip/MSc). RCUK Paediatric Life Support. CoMET Training or equivalent. Experience in Paediatric Emergency Care, including as NIC. Registered with NMC as a Nurse with Paediatric Experience/Competence. Registered with NMC as a Child/CYP Nurse. RCUK Immediate Life Support (Paediatrics) - PILS. Paediatric Retrieval Training (CoMET). Desirable Registered Nurse (Child/CYP). RCUK Paediatric Advanced Life Support. Managing Departmental Budgets. REN Emergency Nurse Competencies (Paediatric). Knowledge and Experience

Essential Leadership Qualification/Academic Module (Recognised). Experience of paediatric emergency care in a hospital and/or NHS provider environment. Experience of acting as a paediatric Nurse in Charge (NIC) and managing a shift and team. Knowledge of human resource processes to support and manage people. Knowledge and experience of quality audits and assurance, specifically in relation to paediatric standards of care. Desirable Knowledge and experience of effectively managing a departmental budget. Essential Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) with staff, children/young people, families, and other professionals. Report writing skills. Knowledge and skills in contemporary infection prevention and control practices. Paediatric venepuncture and cannulation. Team leadership and management skills.
