Job Description

Mon - Fri (8:45 - 16:00) - Term time only Role Purpose • To provide speech, language and communication support to children and young people aged 4-19 with complex autism, learning difficulties, and challenging behaviors within a school setting. • Work as part of a transdisciplinary team ensuring each pupil’s needs are understood, accurately planned for, and closely monitored. • Advise members of the teaching team in relation to pupils’ speech, language, and communication development to achieve the best possible outcomes. • Provide both direct and indirect therapy for individuals and groups of pupils. Main Responsibilities Pupils Contribute to the planning and implementation of appropriate teaching and learning activities to achieve challenging learning objectives in all areas of the curriculum for all pupils on your caseload. Assess, plan, and implement appropriate speech and language interventions for pupils, individually or in small groups, with a wide range of needs including receptive and expressive language difficulties and AAC. Work in close liaison with teaching teams to ensure that speech, language, and communication interventions are embedded within each pupil’s personalized curriculum. Assess and evaluate intervention outcomes regularly and report findings in line with school policies. Work closely with behavior analysts and class teachers to ensure that speech, language, and communication needs are promoted throughout the curriculum. Conduct and analyze speech, language, and communication assessments as required by the school’s assessment framework. Plan and develop speech and language plans and interventions, monitoring effectiveness through robust data collection and analysis. Assess pupils’ need for and use of evidence-based alternative/augmentative communication (AAC) including signing, communication books, and voice output communication aids. Collaborate on the development of positive behavior support plans with behavior analysts, class teachers, and relevant team members. Regularly review speech, language, and communication targets and interventions for contextual fit and long-term outcomes. Contribute to annual review and EHCP reporting, baseline assessments, end of term assessments, and Abbey School’s annual assessment cycle. Assist in the development of detailed transition plans as part of a transdisciplinary team. Meet the speech and language therapy needs for individual pupils based on their EHCP provision and internal referrals. Demonstrate clinical effectiveness using evidence-based practice and appropriate outcome measures. Maintain up-to-date and accurate case notes in line with professional standards and school policies. Attend IEP and annual review meetings as required. Support the development of autonomy and voice of the young people on your caseload. Establish productive working relationships with children and young people, acting as a role model and setting high expectations. Consistently model outstanding speech, language, and communication support in practice.
