Your New Role The In-House Grounds Maintenance Operations Service is responsible for the maintenance of parks and open spaces, allotments, cemeteries, golf courses and semi-natural open space with assorted sports and play facilities within. The service also provides grounds maintenance services to Traded Services incorporating schools and social service locations. Portsmouth's parks and open spaces are of a high standard, fit for purpose, and they are maintained to meet the needs of Portsmouth's residents and visitors. The service's main priority is to maintain a high standard across all parks and open spaces and service areas. In this varied and busy role your responsibilities will be to manage the day-to-day grounds maintenance operation within your area including all parks, gardens, sports fields (cricket, football, rugby, bowling greens, golf course, schools, cemeteries, and allotments). You will ensure planned and ad hoc works are conducted in a safe manner following risk assessments and safe working procedures. You will be responsible for leading a team of staff daily including weekends; identifying workloads within pre-planned schedules and allocating tasks to individuals, ensuring work standards are maintained. As the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor, you will be responsible for line managing staff including productivity, timekeeping, and performance. You will deal with public enquiries and site issues passed on by the parks management team. You will provide improvement work proposals to key parks locations and assist with flower bedding designs and any parks and open spaces improvement schemes, and work with greening and biodiversity strategies. The role includes front line management as well as managing work schedules and ad hoc works and managing herbicide and pesticide usage. The role will also include attending various meetings with users of sports facilities, neighbourhood forums and volunteer and friends' groups. What you'll need to succeed As well as holding a City & Guilds in Horticulture Phase 1 and 2 or equivalent experience, you will hold a PA1 & PA6 Spraying Certificate. You will have knowledge of ground maintenance, horticultural operations and grass sports maintenance. You will be able to use a range of IT packages as well as being able to systematise and supervise multiple operational teams. You will be able to lead and motivate both individuals and groups, whilst being flexible in order to meet the needs of the service. With a high level of organisational skills, you will be able to make quick-thinking decisions when under pressure with the ability to adjust work schedules at short notice and delegate where needed. You will be self-motivated and have a strong character as you will be required to juggle various working demands/situations as a line manager, including updating and maintaining work instructions and records and organising and re-arranging working rotas including weekend working. In addition, you will be able to follow and instruct Health and Safety procedures and legislation. You will hold a full valid Driving Licence as you will be required to cover all areas of the city to ensure all work is undertaken to the standard required.
